A dermatologist by training and an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine, she conducted cancer genomics research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, served on the executive subcommittee of The Cancer Genome Atlas, and co-led development of the Firehose pipeline at the Broad Institute. She was founding chair of the Department of Genomic Medicine at MD Anderson Cancer Center, later served as Chief Innovation Officer of the University of Texas System, where she created the Institute for Health Transformation, and held scientific director roles at Dana-Farber's Belfer Applied Cancer Institute and MD Anderson's Institute for Applied Cancer Science.
