Boards

Cox serves as a Trustee of The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Cox serves on the boards or committees of the Museum of Fine Arts and the Norton Museum. Cox serves on the Board of Fellows of Harvard Medical School and the Dean's Councils of the Kennedy School and Harvard Business School. Cox serves on the board of the Brookings Institution and previously served on its investment committee. Cox serves on the board of Business Executives for National Security (BENS). Cox served on the Defense Business Board, which advises the Secretary of Defense. Cox was a board member of the World Economic Forum's Young Global Leaders Program.

Charities

Cox donated $20 million toward the expansion of the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, which was renamed the Cox Science Center and Aquarium. Cox provided the idea and funding for the U.S. State Department Secretary's Leadership Seminar bringing 50 State Department career officers to HBS annually for leadership training. Cox is one of the founding donors of the HBS On-Line Program.

Communities

Cox was a founding member of the Harvard Business School African-American Student Union in 1968. Cox is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and an annual invitee of the Aspen Strategy Group.

Awards

Cox received the 2002 Leaders and Best Award for Excellence in Growth Capital Investment from the University of Michigan's Center for Venture Capital and Private Equity Finance. In 2003, Cox and Greylock's founding partners received the Harvard Business School Alumni Achievement Award, the school's highest honor. In 2020, Cox received the National Venture Capital Association Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2021, Cox received the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award from the Federal Aviation Administration. In 2022, Cox received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.

Hobbies

Cox was President of the Flying Club at Princeton and is an experienced pilot recognized for 50 years of aviation flight experience.

Family

Cox married Julia Bolton Dempsey in 1970 and married Winifred (Wendy) Wasson Bingham in 2020. Cox's brother is Edward Ridley Finch Cox, husband of Tricia Nixon Cox. Cox's father was Howard Ellis Cox, a New York lawyer and WWII pilot, and his mother Anne Crane Delafield owned a New York fashion design firm.
