Before joining Novartis in 2008 he was Professor and Assistant Head of the Clinical Institute of Virology at the Medical University of Vienna, focusing on the molecular biology of RNA viruses and flaviviruses; he holds a PhD and MD from the University of Vienna and an MS in Biochemistry from Pennsylvania State University.
