Investment thesis
Carolina Angel Network focuses on early-stage private investment opportunities tied to the University of North Carolina community. Each year it curates four to six companies founded by UNC-affiliated entrepreneurs, leveraging its professional investor members to conduct due diligence, including academic diligence memos. Investments are aggregated through a formal Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), and participation is limited to SEC-accredited investors. CAN aims to help close the funding gap for early-stage Carolina-affiliated startups, giving members the chance to evaluate founders and business plans and choose which deals to back.

The firm explicitly describes its style as "nurture capital" with intensive, hands-on engagement, and Stanford is vocal about avoiding the "unicorn at all costs" mentality in African tech, instead emphasizing sustainable market readiness and fundamentals in a more conservative, durability-focused investment approach.
