Founding story

YASA was founded in 2009 as a spin-out from Oxford University following the PhD of founder and current CTO Dr Tim Woolmer. Woolmer has said that as an Oxford PhD student he began asking why there were no electric cars and started investigating electric motor structures, topologies and components, specifically axial flux, from around 2003–2005. Five weeks into his PhD he concluded that removing a torus axial flux motor's stator yoke and splitting it into segments would cut weight while improving torque, power density, efficiency and manufacturability. The key manufacturing breakthrough was segmenting the motor into discrete pole pieces that could be produced from Soft Magnetic Composite material pressed into 3D shapes, avoiding the laminations required by radial machines and simplifying winding and cooling. The team achieved 3-4 kW/kg in an e-motor in 2009, against roughly 0.6 kW/kg for the Toyota Prius motor of the time.
