Company profile

researched Aug 2026

XDEFI Wallet was a non-custodial, blockchain-agnostic cryptocurrency wallet delivered as a browser (Chrome) extension and, after a 2024 rebrand, as iOS and Android applications. The product let users hold assets across many networks, swap tokens from inside the wallet, bridge between chains, connect to decentralized applications, and view NFTs from multiple chains in a single gallery. In 2021 the wallet supported nine blockchains, including Ethereum, Polygon, Binance Smart Chain, Terra, THORChain and Bitcoin, with Avalanche, Arbitrum and Solana in development; by 2022 the company described support for swapping 10,000 assets across 15 blockchains through the wallet and its WebApp, and by the time of its closure coverage described support for more than 2,500 blockchain networks, including Cardano and Midnight.

In July 2024 the company announced it was rebranding XDEFI to Ctrl, following an 18-month rebuild of both the product and the company as a design-led product company. The Ctrl release added a unified cross-chain and cross-account portfolio view, gas abstraction allowing on-chain fees on all supported chains to be paid from a single balance of USDC or XDEFI, and social-login onboarding intended to take under 15 seconds without seed-phrase management. Existing XDEFI users were to be auto-updated to Ctrl, with a planned 1:1 migration of the $XDEFI token to a new $CTRL token estimated for August 2024. The company stated that it never had access to users' private keys or assets, which remained stored locally.

Ctrl Wallet was reported to have come under the Emurgo umbrella in an announcement dated April 29, 2026, with its multichain technology continuing through the SecondFi wallet. After a June 23, 2026 security exploit affecting a subset of Cardano wallets, the company announced on July 7, 2026 that it would permanently shut down: core functions including sending, receiving, swapping and dApp connections were disabled from August 3, 2026, apps and extensions were pulled from stores, and only recovery-phrase export remained. The company said there would be no migration tool, token swap, airdrop, refund or compensation, and directed users to import their 12- or 24-word recovery phrases into wallets such as MetaMask, Trust Wallet or Phantom. The company's site states the wallet was permanently shut down as of August 19, 2026.

Business model

The company distributed a free-to-install self-custody wallet application (browser extension and mobile apps) with in-wallet swapping, bridging and dApp connectivity, and operated an associated native token, $XDEFI, which was planned to migrate 1:1 to $CTRL. Funding came from venture investors via a mix of equity and SAFT instruments, and a public token sale was planned as of 2021.

Traction

Press coverage citing the company's LinkedIn profile reported more than 650,000 monthly users and 11-50 employees at the time of the 2026 shutdown. In 2021 the team numbered 27 and the wallet was in invite-only beta with a public release planned for October 2021. The company said it had been building for over four years as of July 2024.

Latest developments

Following a June 23, 2026 exploit affecting select Cardano wallets, the company announced on July 7, 2026 a permanent shutdown, removing apps and extensions from stores that day and disabling sending, receiving, swapping and dApp connectivity from August 3, 2026, with recovery-phrase export as the only remaining function and no migration, airdrop, refund or compensation offered. Its website states the wallet was permanently shut down as of August 19, 2026. Reporting also notes an April 29, 2026 announcement that Ctrl Wallet had come under the Emurgo umbrella, with its multichain technology continuing through Emurgo's SecondFi wallet.

Full profile — market position, technology, go-to-market, history, risks & controversies

Market position

Positioned as a multi-chain alternative to Ethereum-centric MetaMask and to chain-specific wallets such as Phantom (Solana) and Terra Station (Terra); press coverage in 2021 characterized it as a "MetaMask challenger." The company claimed faster transaction processing and network switching than MetaMask and an "Ape mode" aimed at DeFi power users, and marketed itself as a broad multi-chain wallet supporting thousands of networks before its closure.

Chain-agnostic coverage of a large number of networks with in-wallet swaps and bridging, a single cross-chain NFT gallery, permissionless onboarding with unlimited swaps and withdrawals, and, in the Ctrl generation, a unified multi-account portfolio, gas abstraction from one token balance and sub-15-second social-login setup.

Technology

Non-custodial wallet software in which private keys and user data were stored locally on the user's machine rather than by the company. The wallet was blockchain-agnostic, aggregating balances, swaps, bridging and NFT display across many networks from one interface. Later Ctrl releases added gas abstraction, allowing fees across all supported chains to be paid from a single USDC or XDEFI balance, and social-login account creation without a user-managed seed phrase; recovery phrases remained exportable in standard 12- or 24-word form compatible with other wallets.

Go-to-market

Distribution through browser extension and mobile app stores with direct downloads from the company website, supported by blog and social-media channels (X/Twitter, Discord) and a token and community program; growth plans in 2021 included hiring engineers and a head of growth.

Retail cryptocurrency users spanning newcomers seeking an all-in-one interface and experienced DeFi and NFT users interacting directly with decentralized protocols across multiple chains; the stated goal was onboarding the next 100 million users.

History

The wallet raised $1.2 million in seed funding in 2021 and a $6 million Series A announced in September 2021, at which point it supported nine blockchains and was in invite-only beta. By late 2022 the company described swapping 10,000 assets across 15 blockchains. In July 2024 XDEFI announced a rebrand to Ctrl, accompanied by new iOS and Android apps and a new Chrome extension, following an 18-month rebuild in stealth, plus a planned 1:1 $XDEFI-to-$CTRL token migration. In 2026 the wallet came under Emurgo, suffered a Cardano-related security exploit in June, and was permanently shut down in August 2026.

Risks & controversies

A security exploit disclosed on June 23, 2026 compromised a limited portion of wallets using the Cardano network, prompting temporary maintenance mode and ultimately the decision to wind down the product entirely. The shutdown left users responsible for exporting recovery phrases and moving assets before August 3, 2026, with no compensation, refunds or automatic migration, and the company warned of expected phishing and fake migration-tool scams. The closure occurred amid related Cardano ecosystem incidents, including an exploit at Emurgo's SecondFi wallet that resulted in the theft of roughly 16 million ADA (about $2.4 million at the time).
