History

Wind River Systems was formed by a partnership of Jerry Fiddler and Dave Wilner and incorporated in 1983, with each partner contributing $3,000 and a desk; Wikipedia also lists a founding date of 1981. VxWorks was introduced in 1987 and first flew to space on NASA's Clementine moon probe in 1995, the same year the Tornado integrated development environment launched. VxWorks landed on Mars with Mars Pathfinder in 1997 and later powered Spirit and Opportunity (2004), Curiosity (2012), InSight (2018) and Perseverance (2021). The company acquired competitor Integrated Systems Inc. (maker of pSOS) in 1999 and Belgian firm Eonic Systems in 2001; the Virtuoso RTOS was renamed Rocket, open-sourced in November 2015, and folded into the Zephyr RTOS in 2016. Wind River entered the embedded Linux market in 2004 with a Carrier Grade Linux platform and claimed embedded Linux market share leadership by 2008. Intel acquired the company in 2009 for approximately $884 million; it became part of Intel's Internet of Things Group in 2013, was divested to TPG in 2018, and was acquired by Aptiv, completed December 23, 2022. Leadership has included Barry Mainz (president from 2013), Jim Douglas (2016), Kevin Dallas (CEO, 2020), Jay Bellissimo (president) and Avijit Sinha, previously chief product officer, named president in 2024.

Risks & controversies

In 2014 Wind River was fined $750,000 by the U.S. Bureau of Industry and Security for exporting encryption technology to countries including Israel and South Korea. In 2015 the company was accused of repeated trademark and licensing violations relating to the Grsecurity project, which responded by restricting its code to commercial partners. Aptiv's completed acquisition price was reduced from $4.3 billion to $3.5 billion partly due to changes in Wind River's operating structure required to conclude the regulatory approval process, which Aptiv said would require one-time costs and recurring operating expenses.
