Vuma Cam

Vumacam is a South African video security company that deploys public-space CCTV infrastructure and operates a platform for viewing and acting on the resulting video in real time. The company describes itself as having evolved out of both a physical security operation and a fibre infrastructure provider, and positions itself as the only provider of a single connected network of CCTV infrastructure in the country, building both the management/viewing platform and the underlying physical network of poles and cameras. Its cameras are connected via Vumatel's fibre network and use artificial intelligence to detect events, raise alerts on potential crimes in progress and read licence plates.

The company's Proof Platform aggregates alerts from multiple disparate systems into control rooms, and includes automatic dispatch and nearest-vehicle-first functionality intended to speed response. The platform links vetted private security partners with the South African Police Service in real time. Vumacam states that its network, together with private and public partnerships, contributes to multiple interceptions and arrests each week.

As of its website, Vumacam reports more than 7 000 public-space cameras in Gauteng performing an average of 12 million licence plate reads per day and flagging roughly 55 000 vehicles of interest daily. In February 2024 the Gauteng Provincial Government agreed with Vuma Cam to access feeds from 6 000 cameras in the province, with a further 5 000 partner cameras elsewhere in South Africa, and the company committed to extending coverage into townships, informal settlements and hostel areas.

Business model

Vumacam builds and owns the physical camera network — poles, cameras and connectivity — and operates the software layer used to view and act on the resulting video, selling access to vetted private security companies, businesses, precincts and public-sector agencies rather than one-off hardware installations. Coverage is expanded suburb by suburb and precinct by precinct, with camera feeds and alerts made available to partners under agreements such as the one concluded with the Gauteng Provincial Government.
