Company profile

researched Aug 2026

The University of Rhode Island (URI) is a public land-grant research university whose main campus is in the village of Kingston in southern Rhode Island. It is the state's flagship public research institution and land-grant university, classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity," and is the largest university in the state. URI awards bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees across 80 undergraduate and 49 graduate areas of study through nine academic schools and colleges, plus University College for Academic Success, which serves as an advising college for incoming undergraduates through their first two years.

The university describes more than 90 majors and more than 100 minors at the undergraduate level, along with full-time and part-time graduate degree and certificate programs, online learning through URI Online, an Honors Program, summer and J-Term courses in Kingston, Providence and online, study abroad, and lifelong learning offerings. Student support structures include the Fannon Institute for Student Success for advising, enrollment services, experiential learning (with more than 7,000 students reported doing internships each year), and the University Libraries, which serve both the University community and the general public. Research and commercialization activities are organized in part through URI Innovations, the University's hub for innovation, entrepreneurship, technology commercialization and strategic partnerships, operated by the University of Rhode Island Research Foundation.

URI reports 320 buildings across four campuses. Its main Kingston campus covers 1,254 acres, was largely farmland when purchased by the state in 1888, retains the c. 1796 Oliver Watson Farmhouse, and had its central pre-1950 core listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. A campus master plan was developed by landscape architects Olmsted, Olmsted & Eliot in the 1890s. Academic affiliations include Sea-grant and Space-grant programs, and the university is accredited by NECHE. Athletics teams, the Rams, compete in NCAA Division I (FCS) in the Atlantic 10, CAA Football and NEISA.

Founding story

The university traces its origins to the 1888 chartering of the Rhode Island State Agricultural School, tied to the state agricultural experiment station and sited on the Oliver Watson Farm in Kingston, whose original farmhouse is now a small museum. The school was reorganized in 1892 as the Rhode Island College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, the year the institution recognizes as its founding.

Business model

URI is a public land-grant university funded and governed within Rhode Island's public higher education system, enrolling undergraduate, graduate, professional, online and non-degree students across degree and certificate programs. It also conducts sponsored research and commercialization activity, receiving federal grants and awards such as $4.8 million from the National Science Foundation for its cybersecurity program and $2.5 million from the U.S. Office of Naval Research for the RISE-UP initiative.

Sources describe federal and agency research funding (NSF, Office of Naval Research) supporting university programs, and an endowment reported at $278.7 million in 2025.

Traction

Enrollment was 17,210 students in fall 2024 (14,376 undergraduate, 2,834 postgraduate), and the university announced it expected to welcome 17,000 students for the new academic year. Academic staff totals 784 full-time and 364 part-time. RISE-UP programs have trained more than 300 innovators across Rhode Island, Alaska and Hawai'i, and more than 7,000 students undertake internships each year.

Latest developments

In August 2026 URI announced $2.5 million from the U.S. Office of Naval Research to fund RISE-UP 4.0, expanding entrepreneurship, commercialization and workforce development programs for dual-use maritime, energy and defense technologies in collaboration with URI Innovations. The university also reported $4.8 million in NSF funding for its cybersecurity program, a nursing professor's induction as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, and a Fall Honors Colloquium lecture series running Sept. 15–Dec. 8.

History

The institution was first chartered in 1888 as the Rhode Island State Agricultural School, associated with the state agricultural experiment station, on the site of the Oliver Watson Farm in Kingston. In 1892 it was reorganized as the Rhode Island College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts and extended its courses of study from two to four years; URI recognizes May 19, 1892 as its founding date, and the first class had seventeen students. The name changed to Rhode Island State College in 1909 as programs expanded beyond agricultural education. Harvey Robert Turner, the college's first African American graduate, earned a B.S. in civil engineering in 1914. The current name was granted by an act of the General Assembly in 1951, following the addition of the College of Arts and Sciences and the offering of doctoral degrees. A state Board of Governors for Higher Education became the governing body in 1981 during the presidency of Frank Newman (1974–1983); it was replaced by the Rhode Island Board of Education in 2013 and by a 17-member Board of Trustees in 2019. The faculty adopted an open-access policy for its scholarship in 2013. Twelve individuals have served as president and three as acting president; Marc B. Parlange has been president since August 2021, with Barbara E. Wolfe as provost.
