researched Aug 2026Swarm is a decentralised data storage and distribution protocol designed to serve as base-layer infrastructure for web3, supporting censorship-resistant, serverless dapps, public data commons, permissionless publishing and private messaging. Data uploaded to the network is split into 4kb chunks and distributed via Kademlia routing to the neighbourhood of nodes responsible for storing them; push, pull and retrieval protocols keep chunks synced and retrievable across the network, so that each node effectively participates in a global hard drive. The network claims fault tolerance through redundant storage and local replication, resistance to DDoS that grows with the number of nodes, and cryptographic primitives such as Single Owner Chunks and PSS (Postal Service over Swarm), an end-to-end encrypted node-to-node messaging protocol.
The main client is Bee, a peer-to-peer node implementation that connects operators to the Swarm network and exposes the network's full functionality; the surrounding developer stack includes Bee.js, Swarm-CLI, the Bee API and a Swarm Desktop application for quickly spinning up a node. Swarm also promotes the Fair Data Protocol, which is positioned as a way for applications to keep user data in private data stores and support data interoperability and digital sovereignty, with distribution to users through the Fairdrive dapp store. The project's own token is referenced as BZZ.
Swarm originated as a native base-layer service of the Ethereum web3 stack, developed in the ethersphere/swarm repository as a distributed storage platform and content distribution service intended to store dapp code and data, blockchain and state data, and to provide node-to-node messaging, media streaming, decentralised database services and state-channel infrastructure. That original Go client was superseded when the development team migrated to the new Bee client, citing the more mature libp2p networking layer and lessons learned from the first implementation; the two networks are not compatible at the network layer, and the original repository was archived in August 2021.
