Market position

Svante describes itself as a leading carbon capture and removal solutions provider and states its Series E was the largest capital raise for a point-source carbon capture technology provider, with the round valuing the company over $1 billion. Recognitions cited include the 2019 and 2025 Global Cleantech 100, TIME and Statista's Top Greentech Companies of 2025, the XPRIZE Foundation's XB100 list, second place among private companies in Corporate Knights' Future 50 Fastest Growing Sustainable Companies in Canada, Fast Company World Changing Ideas listings (2024 finalist with 3M; 2026 list), and Foresight Canada's 2026 Canadian Cleantech Award for Venture of the Year in the Scaleup category.

Svante positions its solid-sorbent filter approach against liquid-amine capture: compact modular design intended to be repeatable and capital-cost efficient at multiple scales, no tall gas-liquid towers or toxic liquid chemicals, recyclable sorbents, tolerance of intermittent and load-following operation, and applicability of different sorbent materials across CO2 concentrations from flue gas to ambient air. Its high-volume, standardized filter manufacturing at the Redwood gigafactory is presented as a means of lowering unit manufacturing cost, and the company combines technology supply with in-house project development, financing and carbon-credit structuring capabilities.

Technology

The core technology is a structured adsorbent bed ("filter") coated with solid sorbents, including metal-organic frameworks, deployed in modular rotary contactor machines. Svante's proprietary MOF is CALF-20; its MOF sorbent work has been published in Science, and it signed joint development and later commercial agreements with BASF for industrialization and large-scale production of MOF sorbent materials. The technology concentrates captured CO2 to about 95% pipeline-grade purity, avoids toxic liquid chemicals and tall gas-liquid towers, and uses recyclable sorbents. Contactor products include the Ursa 2000 unit, referenced at a 500,000 tonne-per-year pulp mill project. Svante also supplies filters used in Climeworks' Gen 3 direct air capture technology.

Go-to-market

Svante sells through direct engagement with industrial emitters (consultation-led sales on its site) and through an ecosystem of engineering, construction and industrial partners, including the Kiewit Svante Industrial Alliance for North American projects, Technip Energies in Europe, and collaborations with Chevron, TotalEnergies, Holcim/Lafarge, Cenovus, Enbridge, BASF, Samsung E&A and Climeworks. Demonstration and pilot plants with these partners serve as commercial references, and the development company arm co-develops projects with emitters to bring projects to financial close.

Heavy-emitting, hard-to-decarbonize industrial operators: pulp and paper mills, ethanol producers, waste-to-energy plants, cement and steel producers, lime, aluminum, chemicals, refineries, hydrogen producers and bioenergy facilities, plus direct air capture developers that buy Svante filters.

Geography

Headquartered in the Vancouver area, with the Redwood manufacturing facility and Centre of Excellence in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, and an earlier R&D facility in Vancouver. Projects and partnerships span Canada (Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Alberta), the United States (California, Colorado) and Europe (France), with development teams covering regulatory regimes in Canada, the US and the EU.

History

Between 2007 and 2015 the company opened an R&D facility in Vancouver, built its first CO2 capture machine (half a tonne per day), signed an R&D agreement with Suncor, raised Series A and B from Roda Group, Mitsui, Chevron and Chrysalix, secured bench-scale demonstration funding from Canada, Alberta and the UK, and added Nobel laureate and former U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu to its board. From 2016 to 2018 it agreed a 30 tonne-per-day pilot plant with Cenovus (formerly Husky Energy) in Saskatchewan, appointed Claude Letourneau President and CEO, closed a Cenovus-led Round B-II, and signed collaboration agreements with TotalEnergies and Holcim. In 2019 the Saskatchewan plant came online, the CO2MENT pilot began at Lafarge Canada in Richmond, BC, a demonstration unit was commissioned at TotalEnergies' Pau centre, Series C closed with OGCI Climate Investment leading, the company rebranded from Inventys to Svante, and it formed the Cross Capture Venture partnership with Enbridge, Cross River Infrastructure Partners and OTS.

In 2020-2021 Svante launched a Bakersfield, California demonstration study with Chevron Technology Ventures, signed a joint development agreement with Climeworks for direct air capture, launched a commercial-scale pre-FEED study with LafargeHolcim, OLCV and TotalEnergies for a cement plant in Florence, Colorado, formed the Kiewit Svante Industrial Alliance and a Technip Energies partnership, received $21.4 million from DOE-NETL for cost-shared R&D, published its MOF sorbent work in Science, signed a BASF joint development agreement, closed a $100 million Series D led by Temasek, and received a CDN$25 million investment from the Government of Canada. From 2022 onward it began construction of its Burnaby headquarters and Centre of Excellence for Carbon Capture & Removal, launched the Chevron Bakersfield demo plant, signed a commercial agreement with BASF for large-scale MOF sorbent production, and closed a US$318 million Series E led by Chevron New Energies.
