Company profile

researched Aug 2026

Rovio Entertainment is a Finnish mobile-first games company headquartered in Espoo that creates, develops and publishes mobile games. It is best known for the Angry Birds franchise, which began as a mobile game in 2009 and expanded into animation, film and consumer products licensing. The company states its games have been downloaded over 5 billion times and that it operates seven game studios.

Beyond games, Rovio produced The Angry Birds Movie (2016) and The Angry Birds Movie 2 (2019), and its site promotes a trailer for The Angry Birds Movie 3. Its current live portfolio includes Angry Birds 2, Angry Birds Dream Blast, Angry Birds Bounce and Angry Birds Friends, alongside a back catalogue spanning Angry Birds Journey, Angry Birds Blast, Angry Birds Evolution, Angry Birds Transformers, Bad Piggies, Battle Bay, Small Town Murders, Sugar Blast, Bloom City Match, Fruit Nibblers and AR/VR titles such as Angry Birds AR/VR: Isle of Pigs.

Rovio became a subsidiary of Sega in August 2023 following Sega Europe's bid for over 90% of its shares; it had previously traded on Nasdaq Helsinki under the ticker ROVIO.

Founding story

Three Helsinki University of Technology students, Niklas Hed, Jarno Väkeväinen and Kim Dikert, entered a mobile game development competition at the Assembly demo party sponsored by Nokia and Hewlett-Packard in 2003. Their winning entry, King of the Cabbage World, led them to found a company called Relude on 8 January 2003 in Helsinki. The game was sold to Sumea and renamed Mole War, described as one of the first commercial real-time multiplayer mobile games. In January 2005 Relude took its first investment from a business angel and renamed itself Rovio Mobile; 'rovio' is Finnish for bonfire/pyre.

Business model

Rovio develops and publishes mobile games and also licenses its Angry Birds brand into animation, film and consumer products. Wikipedia notes that as of June 2014 merchandising and licensing accounted for roughly half of annual revenue, and that from 2013 Rovio also published third-party games through its Rovio Stars program and, from 2014, experimental titles via Rovio LVL11.

Revenue derives from mobile games (free-to-play and paid titles distributed through app stores and PC) plus brand licensing, merchandising and entertainment content such as films and animated series.

Traction

Over 5 billion cumulative game downloads per the company; Angry Birds surpassed one billion downloads in May 2012 and two billion in January 2014. Reported 2022 figures were €317.7 million revenue, €28.6 million operating income and €22.9 million net income with 513 employees; the company's history page cites about 500 employees and over 50 nationalities. The Angry Birds Movie opened at No. 1 in 50 countries and The Angry Birds Movie 2 is described as the highest-rated video game movie on Rotten Tomatoes.

Latest developments

Rovio is operating as part of Sega following the August 2023 acquisition; its news feed features an interview with SEGA SAMMY HOLDINGS Group CEO Haruki Satomi and an announcement that Rovio's CEO has been appointed to a leadership role at SEGA Europe. The company is also promoting the first trailer for The Angry Birds Movie 3 and a new Dream Pass event in Angry Birds Dream Blast, and has launched Angry Birds Bounce as a new Angry Birds title.

Games are distributed worldwide.

History

After Relude's 2003 founding and the 2005 rename to Rovio, the company developed dozens of games for early mobile platforms. In 2009 Mikael Hed was appointed CEO and Rovio released Angry Birds, its 52nd game, developed in eight months when the company was near bankruptcy; it reached No. 1 in the Apple App Store paid apps chart. Licensed plush toys followed in 2010, and the company raised $42 million in venture funding in March 2011, renaming itself Rovio Entertainment in July 2011. It hired David Maisel to lead its Angry Birds movie production in June 2011, bought Helsinki animation company Kombo by October 2011 and Futuremark Game Studios in March 2012, opened a Stockholm studio in 2012, and launched the Toons.TV channel with Angry Birds Toons in March 2013 (discontinued 2017). Angry Birds passed one billion downloads in May 2012 and two billion in January 2014. Angry Birds 2 launched in 2015 and The Angry Birds Movie in 2016, followed by Angry Birds Dream Blast in 2018 and The Angry Birds Movie 2 in 2019. A period of decline brought layoffs of 110 employees in December 2014 (and closure of the Tampere studio), 260 employees in August 2015, and at least 35 animation jobs in February 2017; CEO succession moved from Mikael Hed to Pekka Rantala (January 2015) to Kati Levoranta (January 2016). Rovio listed on Nasdaq Helsinki in 2017, opened a London MMO studio in January 2017, established the Lumi studio in Montreal and acquired Darkfire Games (Rovio Copenhagen) in 2020, acquired İzmir-based Ruby Games and opened a Toronto studio in 2021, and added a second Montreal studio and a Barcelona office in 2022. Sega acquired the company in August 2023.

Risks & controversies

Rovio experienced a sustained downturn after its early peak: net profits halved and 110 employees were laid off in December 2014 with the Tampere studio closed; profit fell 73% to €10 million at the end of 2014, attributed by then-CEO Pekka Rantala to weak licensed merchandise sales; 260 employees were laid off in August 2015 after Angry Birds toy and merchandise revenue fell 43% in 2014; and at least 35 animation jobs were cut in February 2017. In January 2014 reports indicated the Angry Birds app leaked data to third parties, possibly including surveillance agencies such as the NSA, after which anti-NSA hackers defaced Rovio's website.
