Renprotocol

1 known investors

Ren is a distributed interoperability protocol that enables cross-chain movement of value between blockchains, with support for bitcoin. Its first version facilitated cross-chain volume across UTXO-based and account-based blockchains, letting bitcoin holders participate in DeFi.

Company profile

researched Aug 2026

Ren, formerly Republic Protocol, is an open protocol that enables permissionless transfer of value between blockchains. Its core product, RenVM, acts as a decentralized custodian: assets such as bitcoin are locked and a corresponding ERC-20 representation (for example renBTC, pegged 1:1) is minted on the destination chain, letting holders of non-Ethereum assets use Ethereum DeFi applications for lending, borrowing and trading without selling their holdings. Assets can be redeemed by burning the wrapped tokens. The bridging user interface is known as RenBridge, and an SDK allows DeFi applications and existing smart contracts to integrate RenVM's capabilities.

The project originally set out to build a cross-chain decentralized dark pool β€” a secret exchange where traders could open orders without revealing price or volume β€” and shipped RenEx as the first such dark pool at the end of 2018. The team subsequently generalized the underlying technology, concluding that privacy and interoperable liquidity were needed across DEXs, lending, leverage and collateral platforms, and rebranded to Ren in 2019 with an interoperability focus. A later architecture, Ren 2.0, was announced with the aims of broader chain support, greater decentralization and community governance through the RenDAO, with sites moved to IPFS after the team began transitioning away from the renproject.io domain.

Founding story

Ren was founded in 2017 in Australia by Taiyang Zhang and Loong Wang, who were classmates at the Australian National University and had worked together previously, including at the software development agency Neucode founded in 2014 with Jaz Gulati. Zhang served as CEO, Wang as CTO and Gulati as lead developer. The idea grew from the observation that large bitcoin trades lacked a formalized venue comparable to equity dark pools, and from the founders' view that existing ways to trade BTC for ETH and ERC-20 assets did not preserve trustlessness, permissionlessness, decentralization and privacy.

Business model

The organization and its funding are centered on Darknode rewards. Darknodes β€” the nodes that collectively run RenVM β€” earn a share of the volume transacted through the network in return for supplying compute, storage and bandwidth. Operators must run the RenVM software on a virtual private server and bond 100,000 REN tokens in the Darknode Registry Contract, which can be forfeited for malicious behavior.

Fees are taken on volume bridged through RenVM and distributed to Darknode operators; the REN token functions as the bond required to run a Darknode, having originally been used to pay transaction fees under Republic Protocol.

Traction

The REN token is listed across multiple exchanges and chains; CoinGecko data shows roughly $3.4 million market capitalization, about $182,000 in 24-hour trading volume, a 1 billion circulating and maximum supply, and approximately $29.4 million in total value locked. After the beta mainnet launch in 2018 the token entered the top 100 by market value for a period.

Latest developments

In November 2022, following the collapse of Alameda Research, which had funded development after acquiring the team, Ren contributors said remaining funding extended only to the end of Q4 and that they would raise additional capital. They planned to disable Ren 1.0 minting within about 30 days, connect the old and new chains via a decentralized bridge, and move to testing and then mainnet deployment of Ren 2.0 β€” described as more decentralized and community-driven, with 2,000+ nodes and added Binance chain support β€” while migrating away from the Alameda-owned renproject.io domain to IPFS-hosted sites controlled by the RenDAO.

β–ΈFull profile β€” market position, technology, go-to-market, geography, history, risks & controversies

Market position

Described as a pioneer of cross-network value transfer and one of the oldest decentralized protocols, Ren positions RenVM as an interoperability layer for DeFi that supplies bitcoin liquidity to Ethereum. Its co-founder characterized RenVM as one of few practical combined privacy and interoperability solutions able to scale and support private computation over multiple inputs and parties. The REN token reached an all-time high of $1.80 in February 2021 and traded around $0.0034 with a market capitalization of roughly $3.4 million and about $29.4 million in total value locked at the time of the latest market data.

Ren's design aims to provide trustless, permissionless and private cross-chain transfer rather than custodial or wrapped-token alternatives, using secure multiparty computation so that no single party β€” including Darknode operators β€” holds the keys, and allowing smart contracts on one chain to control tokens on another without wrapping or unwrapping steps by the user.

Technology

RenVM is a decentralized virtual machine replicated across thousands of nodes called Darknodes, which are randomly reshuffled into shards once a day to resist targeted attacks. It combines Shamir's Secret Sharing to split and protect private keys (including from the Darknodes themselves), secure multiparty computation so that code executes without revealing inputs or outputs, and Byzantine fault tolerance so the network continues operating when nodes fail. The team developed a method of working with ECDSA private keys inside a secure multiparty computation environment, which addressed cross-chain settlement. Reference implementations are written in Go and Rust, smart contracts in Solidity with third-party audits, and RenERC20 contracts act as the bridge representations on destination chains. The protocol has been extended to assets beyond bitcoin, including Dogecoin and Polkadot, and REN token contracts exist on Ethereum, Harmony, Energi, NEAR and Sora.

Go-to-market

Ren distributes RenVM as an open-source SDK and plug-in that DeFi applications and smart contracts can integrate, alongside the consumer-facing RenBridge interface, and works directly with projects adopting RenVM, whose feedback shaped protocol design and tooling. Community channels including Telegram, Reddit, Discord and Twitter, a Medium blog and open GitHub repositories support developer and node-operator engagement.

Geography

Founded in Australia by two Australian National University classmates and headquartered in Singapore, with a globally distributed node network and online community.

History

Founded in July 2017 as Republic Protocol and headquartered in Singapore, the project raised up to $34 million in an initial coin offering ahead of its beta mainnet launch in 2018; RenEx, its first dark pool, launched at the end of 2018. In January 2019 Ren participated in the release of the Wrapped Bitcoin whitepaper introducing wrapped ERC-20 tokens. The protocol rebranded to Ren in 2019 and refocused on DeFi interoperability, with REN shifting from a transaction-fee token to a bond for operating Darknodes. In February 2021 the Ren development team joined Alameda Research, with Zhang and Wang moving to advisory roles; as part of that move the team prioritized Solana support in its multichain libraries and RenVM. Following Alameda's collapse, the team stated in November 2022 that its funding ran only to the end of Q4, that it would seek additional investment, sunset Ren 1.0 minting within roughly 30 days while bridging old and new chains, and move directly into testing and mainnet deployment of Ren 2.0 under the RenDAO.

Risks & controversies

Ren's dependence on Alameda Research, which the team joined in February 2021 and which subsequently collapsed, left the protocol with funding stated to last only until the end of Q4 2022 and required migration away from an Alameda-owned domain. REN lost more than 36% of its market capitalization in the days after the Alameda collapse and trades far below its February 2021 all-time high of $1.80, reaching an all-time low of $0.002483 in April 2026.
