Founding story

Co-founders Claudia Kolonas and Richard Chua met while pursuing MBAs at Harvard Business School and were inspired to start the company by a class called Business at the Base of the Pyramid. Kolonas, a Harvard MBA who studied molecular biology as an undergraduate at UCLA, began her career in her family's agribusiness before moving into financial services at Celebes Capital, where she worked on projects including a joint venture with UOB's asset management arm. Chua earned double degrees in Actuarial Studies and Law from UNSW and founded Talent100, an education business in Sydney that he scaled to EBITDA-positive with seven-figure profits within a year, before working at Bain and on Google's executive strategy team across YouTube, Google Cloud and Google Pay, where he identified fintech opportunities in emerging markets. He later moved to Indonesia to co-found Pluang with Kolonas, whom he subsequently married.

Business model

Pluang operates a retail brokerage and investment platform monetised through transaction and spread-based fees across asset classes, plus a paid premium tier. Fees include US stock transaction fees (0.3% for standard users, 0.2% for Pluang Plus), competitive crypto pricing, low mutual fund admin fees and gold spreads, with no account opening or deposit fees. Overnight leverage fees are charged daily (0.0208% standard, 0.0125% for Pluang Plus). Historically gold transaction fees generated the majority of revenue, with Indonesian equities expected to become a major contributor.

Transaction fees, spreads and financing/leverage fees across gold, US stocks, Indonesian stocks, crypto, options and mutual funds, complemented by the Pluang Plus premium subscription tier. Group revenue was reported at US$30 million in the year prior to May 2026, more than doubling year-on-year, with EBITDA profitability achieved that year.

Traction

The website reports more than 12 million users and 2,000+ available assets. Press coverage in May 2026 cited more than 13 million registered accounts, group revenue of US$30 million with over 100% year-on-year growth, EBITDA profitability, and more than 50,000 account applications within a week of the Indonesian equities launch. Earlier reporting noted almost 3 million registered users by September 2021 and, from January 2020 to November 2021, 22x growth in monthly transacting users and 28.5x growth in users with an active balance.

Latest developments

Pluang launched trading in Indonesia Stock Exchange-listed equities at the end of April 2026 and raised approximately US$10 million in a Series C round led by MUFG Innovation Partners announced in May 2026, with proceeds held in reserve for potential acquisitions or overseas expansion. In August 2026 it launched an AI-powered agentic trading beta in Indonesia. Other recent product additions include options trading, crypto futures with 25x leverage, USD Yield and analyst recommendations.

β–ΈFull profile β€” market position, technology, go-to-market, geography, history, risks & controversies

Market position

Pluang positions itself as a multi-asset investment platform in Indonesia, describing itself as Southeast Asia's first multi-asset investment powerhouse and claiming the broadest suite of asset classes among Indonesian wealth-tech startups. It says it launched Indonesia's first options trading product and the country's first USD Yield product, and cites a CNBC Indonesia "Best Investment Super App" award.

Breadth of asset classes within one licensed app (US stocks and ETFs, Indonesian equities, crypto spot and futures, options, mutual funds, gold), very low minimum investment sizes, multiple regulatory licences held across group entities under OJK, Bappebti and Bank Indonesia supervision, and pro-grade trading tools provided at no additional cost via TradingView integration.

Technology

Mobile apps and a browser-based Pluang Web Trading terminal integrating TradingView charting with 80+ indicators, up to eight simultaneous charts, watchlists, screeners, price alerts, portfolio and position views, and downloadable transaction, order and tax reports. Trading functionality includes order books for crypto, limit, stop, stop-limit, stop-loss and take-profit orders, and automated dollar-cost averaging. The company states ISO certification and a commitment to 99.9% platform stability, and is automating customer onboarding and verification.

Go-to-market

Direct-to-consumer mobile app and web platform, supported by educational content (Pluang Academy, webinars) and community events such as Traders Club gatherings. The company has distributed mini-apps within large Indonesian consumer ecosystems including Gojek, DANA, Tokopedia and Bukalapak to extend reach, and has emphasised capital-efficient customer acquisition, reporting under US$3 million of cumulative marketing spend as of September 2021. Marketing for the newly launched Indonesian equities product was temporarily paused when demand outstripped verification capacity.

Indonesian retail investors and traders across experience levels, from first-time micro-investors making contributions from as little as Rp10,000 to active traders using leverage, options, futures and pro charting tools; the Pluang Plus tier targets higher-value traders.

Geography

Headquartered in Jakarta, Indonesia, with Indonesia as its core market. Its first market outside Indonesia was the Philippines, entered in June 2025 through a Securities and Exchange Commission sandbox programme allowing users to invest in US stocks with Philippine pesos, with an official launch targeted for the following year.

History

The company started as Emasdigi, a single-asset gold investment app, before rebranding as Pluang. In 2020 it expanded into global markets with crypto and Micro E-mini S&P 500 futures. Subsequent years brought additional funding, altcoins and mutual funds, then a further major funding round, US stocks under the PALN (Penyaluran Amanat Nasabah ke Bursa Luar Negeri) framework, leverage features and recognition as "Best Investment Super App" by CNBC Indonesia. The company later reached 10 million users, acquired PT Nilai Inti Sekuritas, and added 500 US stocks, more crypto coins and mutual funds along with a USD Yield product. Most recently it introduced 50 ETFs, web trading, pro trading features and options on US stocks. It cut headcount by about 10% in 2023, entered the Philippines in June 2025 via a securities regulator sandbox, launched Indonesia Stock Exchange equities trading at the end of April 2026, and raised a US$10 million Series C in May 2026.

Risks & controversies

The surge of demand following the Indonesian equities launch strained customer verification operations and forced a temporary marketing pause, with onboarding automation still in progress. The company reduced headcount by about 10% in 2023 and has kept its workforce at roughly 200. Its product mix includes leveraged and derivative instruments (up to 25x crypto futures leverage, 4x US stock leverage, options), and revenue has historically been concentrated in gold transaction fees. Operations depend on multiple Indonesian regulatory licences and on ongoing OJK capital market reforms.
