Pipedream

Pipedream (also referred to as Pipedream Labs) is an Austin, Texas company developing an autonomous underground delivery system. Its stated aim is "hyperlogistics": moving items from one point in a city to another in single-digit minutes or seconds, in both directions, at nominal cost, with the company targeting delivery to homes and offices in under 10 minutes for less than a dollar within the decade.

The system is composed of three elements described by the company: autonomous robots that travel in excess of 60 mph and accommodate more than 95% of everyday consumer products in standard grocery totes; "portals" where customers drive up and collect orders; and an underground pipe network that the company says is permitted and installed like other utilities. The company markets the platform in three segments — restaurants, grocery, and cities — and positions pickup in 15 seconds or less as its consumer-facing promise. Its near-term commercial product, Instant Pickup, is a robotic cart running on an underground track that carries meals from a restaurant kitchen to customers parked outside, intended to reduce wait times and free staff. Longer-range deployments are being tested in Peachtree Corners, Georgia, where an office building was connected to a retail store by a 0.7-mile tunnel; customers order via an app and restaurant staff load meals onto the robotic vehicles through a hatch.

The company frames its market rationale around curbside pickup preference among takeout consumers, 18.8 million people in the U.S. living in food deserts (USDA), and projected increases in daily commute times, and cites reduced traffic and emissions as system benefits.

Business model

Pipedream sells and deploys its underground robotic delivery hardware and network to restaurant operators, grocery businesses, and municipalities, beginning with the Instant Pickup unit installed at individual restaurant locations and extending to city-scale underground networks.

Traction

More than 100 preorders for the Instant Pickup system as of May 2024, including Wendy's, which planned to install at an existing location that year; a completed 0.7-mile tunnel connecting an office building to a retail store in Peachtree Corners, Georgia.

Latest developments

In May 2024 the company announced a funding round of over $13 million led by Starship Ventures with participation from Cortado Ventures, Myelin Ventures and other angel investors and firms, to be used to fulfill Instant Pickup preorders and to build a city-scale underground network.
