Ome

Ome is a smart home company that builds connected devices for household appliances. Its main product is the Ome Smart Knob, a replacement knob that installs on an existing gas or electric stove and adds remote control, monitoring and automatic shut-off capabilities. Users push and turn the knob manually to ignite a burner; once on, heat can be raised, lowered or turned off from the Ome mobile app or by voice through Alexa. The iOS app was available at the time of the site content, with an Android version stated as planned.

Founding story

Founder Akshita Iyer grew up in Orchard Park, New York, and studied neuroscience at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, expecting to enter medicine. After her mother accidentally left a stove on and started a house fire, Iyer concluded that households needed better control over their cooking appliances and founded Ome to turn an ordinary kitchen into a smart one without replacing the stove.

Business model

Ome sells hardware directly to consumers through its own online store, with knobs offered individually and in multi-packs for full stove coverage. Companion software (iOS app, Alexa integration) is provided without a subscription, so revenue derives from device sales rather than recurring fees. The site also maintains a property management section, indicating an addressable channel beyond individual homeowners.
