Company profile

researched Aug 2026

Ola Cabs (rebranded Ola Consumer on 18 August 2024) is an Indian transportation company headquartered in Koramangala, Bangalore, and owned by parent entity ANI Technologies Pvt. Ltd. The company aggregates taxi and other vehicle supply on a mobile app and website, connecting riders with driver-partners across more than 250 Indian cities. Service tiers span economy to premium and include Ola Bike Taxi, Ola Auto, Ola Mini, Ola Prime Sedan, Prime Plus and Prime SUV, plus Ola Rentals (hourly hire), Ola Outstation (intercity), Ola Parcel (intra-city package delivery) and in-app food delivery. Payments are accepted in cash, via UPI, cards and wallets including Ola Money.

Beyond ride-hailing, ANI Technologies operates Ola Fleet Technologies (leasing cabs to partnered drivers), Ola Financial Services (the OlaMoney wallet, buy-now-pay-later, insurance, co-branded credit cards and vehicle loans distributed with partner institutions) and Ola Foods (cloud kitchens, including the Khichdi Experiment brand, reported at more than 50 kitchens across six cities as of 2021). As of September 2019 the company held a 6% stake in electric scooter manufacturer Ola Electric, which had been spun out to founder Bhavish Aggarwal between December 2018 and January 2019. The company has also built in-house infrastructure, migrating from Microsoft Azure to its own Krutrim cloud platform in May 2024 and replacing Google Maps with Ola Maps in July 2024, the latter built partly on the October 2021 acquisition of Pune geospatial firm GeoSpoc.

Several verticals have been discontinued: Ola Cafe food delivery (March 2015–March 2016), the Ola Store grocery service launched July 2015 and shut in March 2016, and the Foodpanda-based food delivery operation, which was stopped in June 2019 with most of its roughly 1,500 delivery executives laid off, though the cloud kitchen business continued.

Founding story

Accounts in sources 3, 5 and 6 attribute the idea to a trip Aggarwal took from Bangalore to Bandipur, during which the driver demanded payment above the agreed fare and abandoned him mid-journey, prompting him to pursue a more reliable transport service. Aggarwal, an IIT Bombay computer engineering graduate (2008) who had worked about two years at Microsoft Research India, first built Olatrip.com to sell short tours and holidays before converting it into Ola Cabs with fellow IIT Bombay alumnus Ankit Bhati. Early constraints included India's prevailing 2G connectivity, which required a lightweight app; sources describe Bhati coding for long stretches and Aggarwal driving cabs himself to fulfil bookings. Aggarwal's parents were initially opposed until the company raised its first round from two angel investors.

Business model

Ola operates an asset-light aggregation marketplace: rather than owning and renting out a fleet, it partners with taxi drivers and vehicle owners and layers technology on top, taking bookings through a call centre historically and through its app and website since 2012. Supply is supplemented by Ola Fleet Technologies, which leases cabs to partner drivers. Adjacent monetisation comes from financial services (wallet, BNPL, insurance, co-branded cards, vehicle loans) and food/cloud-kitchen brands.

Revenue derives from ride bookings across cab, auto, bike-taxi, rental and outstation categories, supplemented by parcel and food delivery, vehicle leasing to driver-partners through Ola Fleet, and financial products distributed by Ola Financial Services. Reported revenue was ₹2,799 crore (US$290 million) in FY23 with a net loss of ₹772 crore (US$80 million).

Traction

Sources report more than 150,000 bookings per day and about 60% Indian market share as of 2014; over 100 cities and a network of more than 200,000 cars by 2014; more than 1.5 million driver-partners across 250 cities as of 2019; 2.5 million+ driver-partners and users in over 250 cities per source 5; and a claimed user base of 125 million in India (source 6). Financially, FY23 revenue was ₹2,799 crore (US$290 million) against a net loss of ₹772 crore, following a first operating profit of ₹90 crore (US$9.3 million) in FY2020-21.

Latest developments

In April 2024 Ola announced its exit from all international markets — the UK, Australia and New Zealand — reportedly with only a few days' notice, to concentrate on India. In May 2024 it migrated off Microsoft Azure to its own Krutrim cloud platform, and in July 2024 it replaced Google Maps with Ola Maps, with Aggarwal urging Indian developers to adopt India-based solutions. On 18 August 2024 Ola Cabs was rebranded as Ola Consumer to cover a broader range of consumer services.

Full profile — market position, technology, go-to-market, geography, history, risks & controversies

Market position

Sources report Ola as India's first and largest homegrown cab aggregator, holding the biggest market share by early 2015 ahead of TaxiForSure, Meru Cabs and Uber, and claiming about 60% of the Indian market in 2014. It is described as one of the world's largest ride-hailing platforms. India's ride-hailing market was valued at $6.42 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach $7.6 billion by 2028 (source 5). After the April 2024 international exits, the company's stated area served is India.

Differentiation cited in sources includes the breadth of vehicle categories on one app (bike taxi, auto rickshaw, mini, sedan, SUV, rentals, outstation) at multiple price points, an aggregation model that avoided owning vehicles, early support for low-bandwidth 2G networks and phone-based booking suited to the Indian market, a hyperlocal approach, and in-house infrastructure (Krutrim cloud, Ola Maps) reducing reliance on foreign platforms. Adjacent offerings — payments and credit via Ola Money, cloud kitchens, and vehicle leasing — extend the platform beyond rides.

Technology

Consumer mobile apps (iOS/Android) and website with real-time tracking, scheduled rides, onboard GPS in vehicles, secure OTP for ride start, an in-app SOS emergency button connected to a safety response team, and up to five emergency contacts with shareable ride links. The early app was engineered to work on 2G networks. The company has vertically integrated core infrastructure: Krutrim, its own cloud platform, replaced Microsoft Azure in May 2024, and Ola Maps, an in-house mapping API built with capabilities from the GeoSpoc acquisition, replaced Google Maps in July 2024.

Go-to-market

Direct-to-consumer distribution through the Ola app (App Store rating 4.6 from about 68,000 ratings) and website, with a driver-partner recruitment funnel — more than 10,000 drivers applied online and offline ahead of the London launch, and over 25,000 were registered at launch. Growth historically relied on discounts and offers (notably in food delivery in 2018), a hyperlocal approach, dedicated pickup zones at airports, railway stations and bus terminals, corporate accounts, and subscription membership via Ola Select.

Urban and intercity passengers in India across price points, from bike-taxi and auto users to premium sedan and SUV riders; corporate travellers via Ola Corporate; driver-partners and vehicle owners who supply capacity and can lease vehicles through Ola Fleet; users of Ola Money and associated credit, insurance and food services.

Geography

Headquartered in Koramangala, Bangalore, Karnataka. Operates in 250+ Indian cities (the App Store listing cites more than 200 cities, including Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Pune). Former international markets — Australia (from January 2018), New Zealand (September 2018) and the UK (March 2019, London service from February 2020) — were exited in April 2024.

History

Bhavish Aggarwal set up Olatrip.com, a Delhi-region trip-planning business, in 2010; in January 2011 he and Ankit Bhati launched Ola Cabs as a taxi aggregator (Wikipedia also records a founding date of 3 December 2010). Bookings were phone-based until the mobile app launched in June 2012. Auto rickshaws were added on trial in Bengaluru in November 2014 and extended to Delhi, Pune, Chennai and Hyderabad from December 2014. In January 2015 Ola acquired radio taxi firm GCabs, renamed Ola Fleet Technologies; in March 2015 it acquired rival TaxiForSure for about US$200 million, integrating it into the Ola app in June 2015. By August 2015 Ola operated in over 100 cities and became app-only. Geotagg was acquired in November 2015 and OlaMoney launched the same month. Bike taxis were introduced in March 2016 and Ola Corporate in 2016; a bicycle-sharing service, Ola Pedal, started in 2017. Foodpanda India was acquired in December 2017 and public-transport ticketing app Ridlr in April 2018. Ola invested in scooter-rental startup Vogo in August 2018 and a further $100 million in December 2018. International expansion ran from Australia (January 2018) to New Zealand (September 2018) and the UK (March 2019), with London service launching in February 2020 with over 25,000 registered drivers. In May 2020 Ola announced layoffs of around 5,000 employees amid a roughly 95% revenue decline during COVID-19, and reported its first operating profit of ₹90 crore (US$9.3 million) in FY2020-21. In April 2022 an internal email said Aggarwal would step back from day-to-day operations to focus on EVs and quick commerce, with Arun GR taking over day-to-day running of the core business. In April 2024 Ola exited the UK, Australia and New Zealand; in August 2024 it rebranded as Ola Consumer.

Risks & controversies

Ola has faced legal difficulties in several Indian states where bike-taxi operations are illegal. The company cut roughly 5,000 jobs in May 2020 after COVID-19 reduced revenue by about 95%, and shut its food delivery operation in June 2019, laying off most of about 1,500 delivery staff; earlier shutdowns include Ola Cafe and Ola Store in March 2016. FY23 results show a net loss of ₹772 crore. Founder Bhavish Aggarwal was criticised in 2022 over reports of a hostile work environment — described in source 4 as tearing up presentations, using epithets and making an employee run laps — which was linked to senior departures including the Ola Cars CEO, Ola CFO and Ola Electric's chief marketing officer. He has also drawn criticism for endorsing 70-hour work weeks and dismissing work-life balance and weekends, and in May 2024 for posts describing preferred gender pronouns as a "western illness"; LinkedIn removed the posts, after which Ola switched cloud providers away from Microsoft Azure.
