Company profile

researched Sep 2026

OffGridBox is a project design and engineering company that supplies renewable energy and clean water systems to remote communities, with a stated focus on "Energy for Health." Its core product is a pre-fabricated 6-foot (roughly 6x6 ft) shipping container fitted with a rooftop solar array, battery storage, inverter and a multi-stage water purification system, enabling households, institutional buildings such as health clinics and schools, productive-use applications, and humanitarian deployments in refugee camps or post-disaster settings.

The product line spans an integrated container system (Pioneer, with a 12- or 24-panel array of 4-8 kWp, three-stage water purification, lithium storage, multiple output ports and an optional cellular router/modem), a portable relief unit (Mini, a 50x50x50 cm shockproof box with a 415 Wp panel, 1,000 W AC inverter peaking at 2.2 kW, a 1.2 kWh lithium battery and a 3-6 filter ultrafiltration system with UV and backwash operating at 5-20 L/min, rated for -20°C to +60°C), a standalone solar module (Flex, 4-6 panels at 1.6-2.4 kWp with a 2 kVA inverter and 2.5-5 kWh battery), and a standalone ultrafiltration water module (Chiara, with UV, backwash and an optional self-priming pump). Add-ons include Wi-Fi with 32 m range, remote monitoring, additional panels and storage, automatic irrigation, desalination for salt water, and 300 USB ports. Earlier reporting described boxes generating up to 12 kWh per day split between battery/light charging and water purification, with water trucked or piped in from a nearby unsafe source, or rainwater captured directly.

Application segments are village kiosks for rural electrification and clean water sold to NGOs, engineering firms and development agencies; disaster relief for NGOs and relief agencies; and other installations for NGOs, businesses and homeowners.

Founding story

The concept originated in 2014 when Emiliano Cecchini and Davide Bonsignore, working on Oxfam projects in South Africa's Eastern Cape, found that installing purified water and off-grid clean energy systems took more than three weeks. Cecchini, who had about 15 years of experience in renewables, and Bonsignore responded by designing a microgrid packaged inside a shipping container with equipment preinstalled. An early intent to sell to affluent buyers seeking off-grid cabins was redirected toward rural and humanitarian markets.

Business model

Two sales channels were described as generating recurring revenue: village kiosk franchising, in which boxes operate as pay-as-you-go kiosks collecting daily micropayments through local shops, and direct sales, in which end users pay the upfront cost of a system for a building plus a flat monthly fee for remote monitoring and fine-tuning. In the kiosk model an investor covers the roughly $15,000 build cost plus about $10,000 for delivery and installation and then receives a share of box revenue for its life, with the split moving toward 50/50 after payback (estimated at about two years at capacity); at roughly $10,000 of annual revenue per box at full utilization the estimated IRR was 15 percent. Boxes are administered by a local merchant-operator, with young women targeted for the role, who handles payments and customer interaction. In a UNDP partnership arrangement, the box is donated to the community with maintenance provided for its life, users pay 18 cents per water refill or device recharge, and OffGridBox takes 20 percent. The company also sells through distributors and offers direct quotes for turnkey systems.

Recurring revenue from kiosk micropayments for water refills and battery/light rentals shared with box investors and local operators; upfront hardware sales for direct installations combined with a flat monthly remote monitoring fee; a desalination model priced at approximately USD 45,000.

Traction

38 boxes deployed globally as of the 2018 seed announcement, with more than 35 boxes reported across 10 countries; the first eight kiosk boxes were deployed in Rwanda at the start of 2018, and seed proceeds were directed at deployments in 42 rural Rwandan communities. A local bottled water brand, "Amaziyateke," emerged around the Rwandan operations. A desalination pilot in the Philippines was reported to serve almost 2,000 individuals. Systems have reportedly run for hundreds of thousands of hours without major service.

Latest developments

The current product range comprises the Pioneer integrated container, the Mini portable relief hub, the Flex solar power module and the Chiara water purification module, with add-ons including desalination, automatic irrigation, remote monitoring and Wi-Fi. The company solicits quotes and manufacturing slot reservations and recruits distributors. A desalination model priced at about USD 45,000 producing 2,000-5,000 liters per day was described in 2020.

▸Full profile — market position, technology, go-to-market, geography, history

Market position

Addresses a market framed by the company as 2 billion people lacking safe water and 800 million lacking access to energy. It stated ambitions to deploy 1,000 boxes in Rwanda, which it characterized as 20 percent of the country's off-grid market, and to expand into neighboring countries and coastal/island markets with desalination.

Positioned on pre-assembled, plug-and-play delivery that compresses installations previously taking more than three weeks into a few hours, on combining power and water in a single unit rather than separate dedicated installations that carry prohibitive upfront costs for rural households, and on remote monitoring software for optimization and predictive maintenance. Units are described as durable in extreme conditions, with one reported to have survived a category four cyclone in Madagascar.

Technology

Containerized and modular systems combining photovoltaic panels, lithium battery storage and inverters with multi-stage ultrafiltration water purification using UV treatment and a backwash cleaning system; rainwater capture is also supported. The company has cited remote monitoring and control software as its differentiator, incorporating sensors, algorithms, automated safety precautions, performance insights, automated energy recovery and appliance prioritization to enable predictive and automated maintenance. Solar-powered desalination using miniaturized reverse osmosis with pressure recovery extends the systems to coastal and island communities without freshwater. Optional Wi-Fi is delivered via cellular or satellite connectivity.

Go-to-market

Sales through village kiosk franchising with local women entrepreneurs as operators, direct sales to end users and institutions, a distributor program, and projects executed with NGOs, development agencies and banks. Partners and channel relationships cited include the UN Development Programme, Oxfam Great Britain and Oxfam Italy, Women for Women, and Banque Populaire du Rwanda. The company has said it aimed to deploy up to 100 boxes a year in Rwanda by partnering with local energy companies and banks.

Off-grid rural households and villages; institutional buildings such as health clinics and schools; NGOs, relief agencies, engineering firms and development agencies; businesses and homeowners seeking resilient or independent power and water; communities in post-disaster and humanitarian settings including refugee camps.

Geography

Headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts at Greentown Labs, with deployments reported in 10 countries including Rwanda (village kiosks in communities such as Nyamiku Village), the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Madagascar, Somalia (El Dahir) and South Africa. Components for the Mini are stated to be built in the US or EU.

History

Following the 2014 concept and a 2013 Typhoon Haiyan deployment with Oxfam in the Philippines, the company entered the Techstars accelerator in early 2017 and was a MassChallenge finalist with a $100,000 prize. It was honored by Not Impossible at CES in early 2018, deployed its first eight Rwandan kiosk boxes at the start of 2018, and announced a $1.6 million seed round dated September 2018 (covered in December 2018 and posted to its site in February 2019), while stating plans to raise a Series A in 2019. Deployments have included post-hurricane Puerto Rico, post-cyclone Madagascar, the Philippines, Somalia and South Africa. The product line has since broadened to the Pioneer, Mini, Flex and Chiara offerings.
