NetBox

NetBox Labs develops and commercializes NetBox, an open source platform for modeling, documenting, operating, automating, and securing networks and infrastructure. NetBox combines IP address management (IPAM) with data center infrastructure management (DCIM) in a single data model covering hierarchical regions, sites and locations, racks, devices and device components, cables and wireless connections, power distribution, circuits and providers, virtual machines and clusters, IP prefixes, ranges and addresses, VRFs, FHRP groups, AS numbers, VLANs, L2VPN overlays, tenancy and contacts. It is built on Python and the Django framework, licensed under Apache 2, and exposes REST and GraphQL APIs plus extension mechanisms including custom fields, custom model validation, export templates, event rules and a plugin architecture.

The commercial portfolio includes NetBox Cloud, a fully hosted single-tenant SaaS edition with managed upgrades and plugin compatibility, automated backups, geographic redundancy, dev/staging environments, SOC 2 compliance, mTLS client-certificate authentication and per-tenant IP allowlisting; NetBox Enterprise for self-hosted deployments; NetBox Discovery for automated network and device discovery; NetBox Assurance for detecting and remediating drift from intended state; and NetBox Operator, an agentic AI operations product. A free NetBox Cloud plan covers up to 100 devices, 500 IP addresses, two operational branches and 10,000 API requests per month. The company positions the platform as a system of record spanning intent and design, operational state, drift detection, change history and audit trail, with branching, validation, change review and approval gates, and API-first/MCP interfaces intended for AI agent workflows.

Founding story

NetBox originated in 2015 as an internal project by network engineer Jeremy Stretch at DigitalOcean and grew into a widely used open source tool. In 2023 NetBox Labs was spun out of NS1 to serve as the commercial steward of the project, co-founded and led by CEO Kris Beevers.

Open core: the NetBox project is distributed as Apache 2-licensed open source, while NetBox Labs sells managed and enterprise products built on top of it — NetBox Cloud (hosted SaaS, with a free entry tier and paid scale-up plans) and NetBox Enterprise for customer-operated infrastructure — plus adjacent products such as Discovery, Assurance and Operator. The company states it reinvests product revenue into the open source project and community, including full-time staff dedicated to those projects.

NetBox is reported in use at 10,000+ organizations, with named deployments at CoreWeave, ARM, Cisco DevNet Sandbox, J.P. Morgan, Kaiser Permanente, Riot Games, Wikimedia, Dartmouth College and CENIC. NetBox Labs reports a globally distributed team that quadrupled between 2023 and 2025 and was approaching 100 staff at the time of its Series B, alongside hundreds of recognized brands as customers and a stated cadence of new features every one to two weeks.

Latest developments

In July 2025 NetBox Labs announced a $35 million Series B led by NGP Capital with Sorenson Capital and Headline as new investors and participation from Flybridge, Notable Capital, Mango Capital, Salesforce Ventures, Two Sigma Ventures and IBM, to fund product development and hiring across customer success, engineering, marketing, product, partnerships and sales. During 2025 the company shipped AI-related capabilities including a NetBox MCP server and open-sourced additional AI integrations, and described NetBox Operator, an agentic AI operations platform, as part of its portfolio. Documentation lists NetBox v4.6.9 as the latest release version.
