Founding story
Hyland Software was founded in 1991 by Packy Hyland Jr. together with his father, John "Packy" Hyland Sr., funded by family, friends, small investors and $20,000 of Hyland Sr.'s own money. Packy Jr. wrote a program in BASIC and sold it to Necedah Bank in Wisconsin to store reports on optical disks for compliance while reducing document retrieval time. In January 1992 he hired Miguel Zubizarreta, who built the first commercial version of OnBase β a Windows 3.0 client-server, C++ object-oriented product using an Oracle relational database β installed at Necedah Bank, the Bank of St. Cloud and the Roseville Bank. The company did not turn a profit until 1999.
Business model
Hyland licenses and hosts content services software for enterprises, delivering OnBase as a SaaS offering (OnBase Cloud) and Alfresco and Nuxeo content services as cloud-hosted platform-as-a-service, alongside on-premises deployments; historically it also sold through regional resellers and white-label arrangements with core banking providers.
