The group is organized into divisions including Hybe 360, Hybe HBS, Hybe IPX and Hybe NEB, and operates a multi-label structure whose labels include BigHit Music, Source Music, Pledis Entertainment, KOZ Entertainment, Belift Lab (a joint venture originally structured with CJ ENM) and ADOR. Artists associated with the group include BTS, Tomorrow X Together, Seventeen, LE SSERAFIM, Enhypen, fromis_9 and NewJeans. Its Weverse fan community and commerce platform, built by subsidiary beNX (later renamed Weverse Company), received a ₩354.8 billion ($321 million) investment from Naver Corporation for a 49% stake alongside the transfer of Naver's V Live service.
Hybe Interactive Media (HYBE IM), the group's Seoul-based gaming subdivision led by President Wooyong Chung, publishes and develops games including Rhythm Hive (launched February 2021), BTS Island: In the SEOM, Astra: Knights of Veda, OZ Re:write, Arkheron and the upcoming MMORPG Architect: Land of Exiles. HYBE IM has raised a cumulative KRW 137.5 billion (approximately $100 million) across external rounds and employed roughly 240-300 people.
Founding story
Bang Si-hyuk, a songwriter and producer who had worked at JYP Entertainment from 1997 alongside Park Jin-young and contributed to acts such as g.o.d, Rain, the Wonder Girls and 2AM, left JYP in 2005 to establish his own label, Big Hit Entertainment, in Seoul. Born in Seoul on August 9, 1972, he studied aesthetics at Seoul National University and won the Yoo Jae-ha Music Contest in 1994. The company began as a small, resource-constrained challenger to SM, YG and JYP, built around direct artist management, record production and creative control held close to the label, and initially lacked a breakout act. A turning point came in 2010 when Bang signed Kim Nam-joon (RM) as the first member of what became BTS.
Business model
Hybe operates a multi-label music business combined with platform and IP monetization. Labels sign, develop and manage artists and produce and publish recordings; the group then extends artist intellectual property into concerts and events, merchandise and direct fan commerce through the Weverse community platform, and into adjacent media such as games via HYBE IM. Growth has come both organically and through acquisitions of and stakes in labels and technology companies, with divisions organized around fan services, IP and interactive media.
Revenue derives from music production, publishing and distribution, artist development and management, event and concert organization, IP licensing and merchandising, fan platform and commerce services, and game publishing and development. Reported group revenue was KRW 2.66 trillion (about USD 2.32 billion) for 2025 and about KRW 2.25 trillion for 2024.
Traction
Group revenue reached KRW 2.66 trillion (about USD 2.32 billion) in 2025 with net income of KRW 254.4 billion, up from about KRW 2.25 trillion in revenue in 2024. BTS reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with Dynamite in 2020 and the group's IPO followed in October 2020. HYBE IM has raised about $100 million cumulatively and its published title Astra: Knights of Veda passed one million pre-registrations within a week of opening pre-registration in March 2024. Hybe America, which oversees Ithaca Holdings, posted revenue of about KRW 312.9 billion ($213.4 million), up 30% year over year.
Latest developments
In March 2025 HYBE IM announced an additional KRW 30 billion (about $21 million) raise from existing investor IMM Investment plus new investors Shinhan Venture Investment and Daesung Private Equity, bringing its cumulative funding to KRW 137.5 billion (about $100 million), earmarked for marketing, operations and localization ahead of launches including Architect: Land of Exiles and Arkheron. In July 2026 Supertone approved its dissolution at a general meeting on July 15 and entered liquidation, with Hybe seeking buyers for the Shift, Clear and Air services as part of what it called an AI business strategy realignment.
▸Full profile — market position, technology, go-to-market, geography, history, risks & controversies
Market position
Hybe is described as a South Korean music and entertainment giant and a major global music and platform group, competing historically with SM, YG and JYP Entertainment and, in 2023, contesting control of SM Entertainment against Kakao. Its rebranding and diversification moved it from a single-label agency toward a multi-label entertainment ecosystem; market attention has focused on diversification beyond BTS, which now accounts for less than 20% of group revenues, and on how the group manages label independence.
The company converted artist success into a platform business, combining a multi-label structure that retains label-level creative independence with owned fan-facing technology (Weverse and Weverse Shop) for direct fan communication and commerce, and extends the same intellectual property into games and other media. HYBE IM can offer developer partners integrated music and video production drawing on the parent group's artists and production talent.
Technology
Hybe positions itself as a technology-driven entertainment platform company. Subsidiary beNX (renamed Weverse Company) developed the Weverse fan community app and Weverse Shop, and absorbed Naver's V Live streaming service into an integrated fan platform. The group invested in and later held a majority of Supertone, an AI audio company founded in 2020 whose technology produced and transformed voices by combining elements of human speech, with products including the Supertone Shift voice-conversion tool, the Clear noise-removal product and the Air spatial-audio service, used for the virtual girl group Syndi8, concert production for Tomorrow X Together, and voice conversion for Netflix and Disney. HYBE IM builds interactive media and games in-house and through investments in developers such as Aqua Tree, Flint and Action Square.
Go-to-market
The group markets through its artist rosters and labels, live events and touring, and its owned Weverse fan community and shop, supplemented by partnerships and joint ventures with companies such as Universal Music Group and Geffen Records, CJ ENM, Naver and YG Plus. HYBE IM pursues publishing agreements with external developers, including Bonfire Studios, Flint and Macovill, and cross-promotes titles with Hybe artists.
Global music fans and fandom communities, particularly K-pop audiences in Asia and North America, reached through recorded music, concerts, merchandise, fan platform subscriptions and commerce, and games; business counterparties include record labels, distributors, platform partners and game developers.
Geography
Headquartered in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, South Korea, and serving customers worldwide with a primary focus on Asia and North America. US operations include Hybe America and the Ithaca Holdings business, plus a Los Angeles-based label formed with Geffen Records; the music business has also expanded into Latin America. HYBE IM publishes titles in markets including South Korea and Japan.
History
Big Hit Entertainment signed the vocal trio 8Eight in 2007 and in 2010 agreed with JYP Entertainment to co-manage the boy group 2AM. BTS debuted on June 13, 2013. In 2012 the company signed Lim Jeong-hee and formed the girl group Glam with Source Music; Glam disbanded in 2014 following legal action against member Kim Da-hee. The JYP joint contract ended in April 2014 and 8Eight disbanded that year. In 2015 KOSDAQ-listed Signal Entertainment Group took stakes via a KR₩6 billion convertible bond, a relationship ended in early 2016 when the bonds were settled. In August 2018 Big Hit and CJ ENM announced a joint agency, filed as Belift Lab (52% CJ ENM / 48% Big Hit), which debuted Enhypen in November 2020; BTS renewed for seven years in October 2018. Tomorrow X Together debuted in March 2019, when Lenzo Yoon was also appointed co-CEO alongside Bang. The company acquired Source Music in July 2019 and game firm Superb in August 2019, became majority shareholder of Pledis Entertainment in May 2020 (KFTC approval in October), and acquired KOZ Entertainment in November 2020. Big Hit listed on the KOSPI in October 2020 and was named the fourth most innovative company of 2020 by Fast Company on the strength of Weverse. In January 2021 Big Hit and beNX invested a combined ₩70 billion (US$63 million) for a 17.9% stake in YG Plus; Naver subsequently took 49% of beNX. February 2021 brought a strategic partnership with Universal Music Group, including a Geffen Records joint venture to launch a Los Angeles-based global boy group, and a ₩4 billion investment in AI voice company Supertone. The company rebranded as Hybe in March 2021, spinning the Big Hit recording and management arm into BigHit Music within a new Labels division; Bang stepped down as CEO in July 2021 to serve as chairman. Later milestones include the acquisition of Ithaca Holdings in the United States, BTS's 2020 Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 with Dynamite, the start of BTS military service in 2022, an abandoned bid for SM Entertainment in March 2023, the 2024 ADOR/Min Hee-jin/NewJeans dispute, and the 2026 liquidation of Supertone.
Risks & controversies
Reporting highlights concentration risk from dependence on BTS, whose members began compulsory military service in 2022 and who now represent less than 20% of revenues. A 2024 conflict involving ADOR, Min Hee-jin and NewJeans raised questions about governance, creative control and management discipline. Acquisitions have produced losses: Hybe abandoned its bid for SM Entertainment in March 2023 after concluding the price exceeded a fair range amid competition with Kakao; Hybe America's net loss widened from about KRW 140 billion ($95.5 million) to KRW 323.1 billion ($220.4 million), with impairment losses of roughly KRW 279.6 billion ($190.7 million) recorded in 2025; and Supertone was put into liquidation in 2026 after roughly KRW 49 billion of investment, with Hybe stating continued operations would be difficult. Earlier issues included the 2014 disbandment of Glam after a member was convicted of blackmail.
