Positioned as an "AI notepad" rather than a meeting notetaker bot, competing with Read AI, Fireflies, Otter and Quill, and with transcription features being folded into productivity suites such as Notion. TechCrunch notes AI meeting notes are becoming a commodity, with differentiation shifting to acting on notes and integrating them into other workflows. Co-founder Pedregal frames the differentiator as personal control and post-meeting work; Lightspeed's Mike Mignano cites interface, human control over notes and cross-meeting context as advantages.

No bot joins the call — audio is captured from the user's computer, which sources cite as a key reason for adoption. The product blends the user's own typed notes with AI enhancement rather than producing a purely machine-generated transcript summary, keeps notes private by default and editable at any time, and increasingly acts as a context layer that other AI tools can query via MCP and APIs.

Technology

The app records and transcribes computer audio locally on the user's device instead of joining calls as a participant bot, then uses AI models to enhance user-written notes and generate summaries, decisions and action items. Later additions include AI chat over single meetings, folders or the full note corpus; a Model Context Protocol server; and personal and enterprise APIs for programmatic access to note context. Granola states data is encrypted in transit, that no data is shared with third parties per its Play Store disclosure, that users may request deletion, and that model-training opt-out is available on all plans (org-wide on Enterprise).

Bottom-up, product-led distribution: free downloads across desktop and mobile app stores, with growth driven largely by word of mouth among VCs and founders according to the co-founder. Public endorsements from technology figures and a Time listing supported awareness. Expansion into teams and enterprises comes through collaboration features, Spaces, integrations with CRM and productivity tools, and paid Business/Enterprise plans.

Professionals with heavy meeting loads, initially prosumer users concentrated among founders and venture investors, and increasingly sales, product, customer-success and other teams inside companies. Role-specific positioning exists for sales and product teams, and enterprise buyers are addressed with SSO, admin controls and org-wide policies. TechCrunch names Vanta, Gusto, Thumbtack, Asana, Cursor, Lovable, Decagon and Mistral AI as enterprise customers; a pricing-page testimonial comes from Brex CEO Pedro Franceschi.

History

Sources indicate the product launched roughly a year before May 2025. A $43 million Series B at a $250 million valuation was announced in May 2025 alongside collaboration features, bringing total funding to $67 million. In February 2026 Granola shipped an MCP server, and on 25 March 2026 it announced a $125 million Series C at a $1.5 billion valuation together with Spaces and personal/enterprise APIs, taking total funding to $192 million. The Android app was last updated 4 August 2026.

Risks & controversies

TechCrunch reports that Granola drew user criticism, including from an a16z partner, after locking down its local database, which broke on-device AI agent workflows; the company attributed this to a storage change and committed to bulk-access APIs. The market is described as commoditizing, with competitors and productivity suites adding equivalent transcription features. A Google Play review describes note uploads failing with data loss and no recovery option, to which the company responded via support.
