Futraheat

Futraheat is a UK engineering company developing high temperature industrial heat pumps for process heating applications in the 100°C-200°C range. Its core technology is TurboClaw, a patented oil-free centrifugal (turbo) compressor designed for lower capacity, sub-MW duties, which the company says operates at less than half the speed of conventional centrifugal machines and uses magnetic bearings in a compact, modular package.

The flagship product line is the Greensteam heat pump series, built around TurboClaw and intended to integrate into existing factory infrastructure to supply high temperature process steam. The stated beachhead product is the Greensteam 360, a 300kW unit with a two-stage TurboClaw design delivering a 60°C temperature lift, which the company states can cut energy use by up to 90 percent and reduce energy bills and CO2. Futraheat's approach is to recover low grade waste heat generated as a by-product of industrial processes and boost it to reusable temperatures on site, addressing a temperature band that Clean Growth Fund describes as responsible for over 3% of total global emissions.

The company is a small team of engineers headquartered in Surbiton, England, with three founder members active in the business: Tom Taylor (Chief Executive Officer, previously at BAE Systems and Rolls Royce, MEng Mechanical Engineering, University of Manchester, MBA Warwick Business School), Ruth Cattell (Chief Scientific Officer, MEng aeronautical engineering, Imperial College London, and a PhD from City, University of London focused on TurboClaw) and Scott Mackenzie (Operations and Projects Manager, MEng mechanical engineering, City, University of London, with over 10 years in high-speed motors, generators and turbocompressors).

Founding story

Futraheat was established in 2021 by three founder members, all of whom remain active in the business. One founder, Chief Scientific Officer Ruth Cattell, completed a PhD at City, University of London focused on the TurboClaw compressor that underpins the company's products.

Business model

Futraheat designs and supplies modular high temperature heat pump units (the Greensteam series) built around its own TurboClaw compressor for installation into industrial customers' existing plant. Development has been supported by grant funding programmes and equity investment.

Sales of industrial heat pump equipment to factory and industrial end users, supplemented by grant funding for technology development projects.

Traction

First units were planned for installation with early-adopter industrial customers in 2024. A British brewery was reported as the first in the UK to install a Futraheat heat pump delivering steam up to 130°C, with the Hepworth Brewery site featured in national and trade coverage between October 2024 and January 2026.
