Company profile
researched Aug 2026Dimension Data was a South African-headquartered information technology services company founded in 1983 in Johannesburg. It delivered IT consulting, systems integration, managed services, technical and support services, security, and education and learning to enterprise clients, and maintained operations on every inhabited continent. Reported focus areas included digital infrastructure, hybrid cloud, workspaces for tomorrow, and cybersecurity, alongside data centre sale, operation, management, transformation and relocation; server and storage management; and backup services. It also provided public and private cloud computing and Microsoft support.
The group grew by acquisition, assembling subsidiaries including AccessKenya Group, AlwaysOn, ContinuitySA, e2y Commerce, Earthwave, Euricom, Internet Solutions, JQ Network, Merchants, Nexus IS, NextiraOne, Oakton, Plessey, Security Assessment, SQL Services, Training Partners and Viiew. Sources also describe a SPEKTRA network management platform associated with reductions in client network incidents.
Dimension Data was acquired outright by Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) in 2010 and delisted from the Johannesburg and London stock exchanges. On 1 July 2019 all operations except those in the Middle East and Africa were folded into NTT Ltd, formed from the merger of NTT Communications, Dimension Data and NTT Security. The remaining Middle East and Africa business continued under the Dimension Data brand until it was renamed NTT Data with effect from 1 April 2024, ending the brand's independent identity after about 40 years. The dimensiondata.com domain now presents NTT DATA services spanning AI, applications, cloud, connectivity, consulting, cybersecurity, data and analytics, digital workplace, edge, enterprise networking, global data centres, infrastructure and sustainability services.
Founding story
The company was founded in 1983 in Johannesburg, South Africa, by Keith McLachlan, Werner Sievers, Jeremy Ord, Peter Neale and Kevin Hamilton as an IT services provider aimed initially at the domestic South African market. Early work centred on computer hardware distribution, basic networking and systems integration during a period of apartheid-era international sanctions that limited access to foreign technology and partnerships, which encouraged locally tailored network integration offerings for South African enterprises.
Business model
Enterprise IT services and products delivered through consulting, systems integration, managed services and support contracts, including data centre services, network integration and management, cloud services, security and training, sold to large organisations across multiple countries and industries.
Revenue came from technology product resale and distribution together with services fees for consulting, systems integration, managed and support services, data centre and cloud services, and training.
Traction
Revenue rose from about $2 billion in 2003 to roughly $4 billion by September 2009 and $7.5 billion in 2014, with 31,000 staff across 58 countries reported in 2016. Other sources cite approximately $5 billion annual revenue by the early 2010s and around 28,000 employees as of 2023. Named client stories on the company site include Liantis and Randstad.
Latest developments
Following the 1 April 2024 rebranding to NTT Data, the dimensiondata.com domain now hosts NTT DATA content, including a 2026 Global AI Report, an expanded collaboration with Google Cloud combining Gemini Enterprise with NTT DATA services, recognition as a Market Shaper in the Gartner Emerging Market Quadrant for Physical AI Services, and a Leader placement in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Global WAN Services. In February 2026, Dimension Data Nigeria was reported to have raised NGN 20 billion (about $13.7 million) through a bond programme under Dimension Data SPV Funding Plc after approval from Nigeria's Securities and Exchange Commission.

Dimension Data listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange on 15 July 1987, with Jeremy Ord appointed executive chairman that year. Between 1998 and 2000 it invested in and acquired companies in Europe, the UK and the US, including London-based Plessey in 1998, and listed on the London Stock Exchange on 31 July 2000, raising $1.25 billion.
