Technology

The DedroneTracker.AI sensor-fusion engine combines radio frequency, radar, video and acoustic inputs with behavior-model filters, neural networks and AI-based imagery trained on more than 18 million images to suppress false positives. Drone identification relies on recognizing model-specific RF protocols rather than decoding telemetry; the system references a database of nearly 300 drones (with RF sensors classifying nearly 600 drones from 150 manufacturers) and locates both drone and pilot. On the DedroneTrailer configuration, stated ranges are up to 5 km for RF, up to 1 km for PTZ cameras and greater than 1 km for radar (one FAQ on the same page states up to 3 km). Mitigation options include smart jamming (DedroneDefender 2), cyber take-over and kinetic effectors.

History

Dedrone launched its first sensor and DroneTracker software in January 2015. In 2015, its products detected 52 unauthorized drones in 26 days over military facilities in or near Washington, D.C., and 43 more over a U.S. military facility in Virginia the following month. In 2016 the company moved its corporate headquarters from Kassel, Germany to San Francisco, won the Cisco Innovation Award, and provided anti-drone security for the World Economic Forum in Davos. In 2019 its counter-drone technology was approved by the U.K. Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure, described as the first official validation of counter-drone technology in the United Kingdom. In 2020 the founders stepped back and Aaditya Devarakonda became CEO, with Seebach continuing as COO and Lamprecht as executive chairman and board member. In November 2022 Dedrone began using cameras from Swedish network-camera maker Axis Communications. Axon Enterprise completed its acquisition of Dedrone in October 2024.

Risks & controversies

Mitigation capabilities such as jamming are described as usable only where legally permitted, and BVLOS drone operations referenced by the company require FAA waivers, indicating regulatory constraints on deployment. Public figures published on the company's site are self-reported and some are internally inconsistent (e.g. 955+ versus 500+ protected sites; radar range stated as greater than 1 km in one place and up to 3 km in another).
