Chromatic

Chromatic is a cloud testing and review platform for frontend user interfaces, made by the team that maintains Storybook. On every code push it captures pixel-perfect snapshots of components in real browsers and compares them over time to detect regressions, running three categories of checks: visual tests for appearance, layout, fonts and colors; interaction tests that simulate clicks, typing, hovering and dragging; and accessibility tests that run axe against each component to surface WCAG violations with remediation guidance. Tests execute in parallel across Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge and at configurable viewport widths and heights.

The platform builds on tests teams already have rather than requiring new ones: Storybook stories (including play functions) are converted automatically into test cases, while Playwright and Cypress end-to-end runs are archived as DOM, styles and assets, re-rendered in cloud browsers and diffed for visual changes. Supporting capabilities include SteadySnap, which stabilizes frontend rendering by tracking browser activity, freezing dynamic content and using burst capture, flagging still-inconsistent tests as unstable so they do not block builds; and TurboSnap, which analyzes Git history and the bundler dependency graph to snapshot only tests affected by changed files.

Beyond testing, Chromatic provides UI Review for stakeholder sign-off, with assigned and default reviewers, comments and change requests beside live components, and status surfaced in pull requests and CI. Publish Storybook centralizes components, stories, tests and documentation in a shared, searchable, self-updating workspace with per-commit history and permalinks. Integrations include Slack notifications, a Figma plugin, webhooks, story embedding in tools such as Notion and Medium, and Storybook composition. The company states that component metadata is being made machine-readable and that agent invitations via MCP are planned for Q1 2026.
