Company profile

researched Aug 2026

Carousell is a Singapore-headquartered e-commerce company that runs a mobile and online marketplace where users buy and sell used and new goods. Listings are created by photographing an item and adding details, with buyers and sellers negotiating and completing deals in-app. Categories span fashion and luxury, furniture, mobile phones and electronics, cars, toys and collectibles, property, jobs and home services. The app is available on iOS and Android.

The company describes itself as a community marketplace in Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia, and Wikipedia additionally lists Macau, Australia, New Zealand and Canada among areas served. Beyond the core Carousell brand, the group operates the classifieds platforms Mudah in Malaysia, Chotot.com in Vietnam and OneKyat in Myanmar, which were retained as separate brands after the 2019 merger with Telenor's 701Search.

Product features include AI-assisted listing (automatic suggestion of title, description, category and price from a photo or video), image search, a trading card scanner, seller tools and a CarouBiz upgrade for business sellers, Carousell Official Delivery and 7-ELEVEN cash-on-delivery in Taiwan, Carousell Certified listings for secondhand phones, bags, watches and cars, and escrow-protected Buyer Protection checkout in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. Carousell also buys certain items directly from users, including clothing, phones, luxury bags and cars in Singapore.

Founding story

Carousell was founded in Singapore on 14 May 2012 by Quek Siu Rui, Marcus Tan and Lucas Ngoo, university friends who were inspired during an internship year in Silicon Valley through the NUS Overseas College programme; Quek has said the idea came from the difficulty of selling his own unused items, such as an old MacBook, through traditional forums and classified ads. The concept, initially called Snapsell, was pitched at Singapore Startup Weekend in March 2012 and won the top prize after 54 hours of building, giving the team office space at Blk 71 and access to investors. Quek dropped out of his honours year in May 2012 to work on the company full-time, and the team started with a S$35,000-equivalent university grant of $35,000. The app launched in August 2012 and was ranked second among top free lifestyle apps in Singapore within three days; the first item sold was an Amazon Kindle e-reader for S$75. Carousell Pte. Ltd. was registered on 2 January 2013.

Business model

Carousell operates a two-sided consumer-to-consumer and business-to-consumer classifieds marketplace, monetising the free listing experience through advertising, premium seller packages and subscriptions, and transaction-related services such as in-app payments, delivery and certified/authenticated secondhand goods.

Monetisation is centred on online advertising through Carousell Media Group, premium user packages and subscription services such as CarouBiz for business sellers and Carousell Pro for property, alongside in-app purchases and paid transaction services. In 2018 the company reported quadrupling revenue while cutting losses.

Traction

By 2016 users had created over 57 million listings and more than 23 million items had been sold. By October 2019 the app was live in seven countries and had recorded 250 million listings and 71 million sales, with a team of about 400 people. The Android app has over 10 million downloads and a 3.3-star average across roughly 378,000 reviews.

Latest developments

On 23 September 2025 Carousell opened its first luxury boutique at The Centrepoint in Singapore, selling preowned luxury items. Recent product updates include improved image search in Singapore and Hong Kong and a trading card games scanner. The company had also agreed to acquire secondhand fashion retailer Refash for an undisclosed sum.

β–ΈFull profile β€” market position, technology, go-to-market, geography, history, risks & controversies

Market position

Carousell is described as the pioneer of mobile classifieds in Singapore and a regional leader in online classifieds, operating across eight markets in Southeast Asia plus Taiwan and Hong Kong following the 701Search merger, and reached unicorn status with a US$1.1 billion valuation in 2021. In Taiwan it competes with entrenched incumbents such as Yahoo! and Ruten, and its model is comparable to eBay and Craigslist.

The company positions itself around a mobile-first, social "snap to sell, chat to buy" flow, AI-assisted listing, and trust and convenience features such as verified reviews, escrow-protected Buyer Protection, integrated delivery and Carousell Certified authenticated secondhand goods.

Technology

The platform relies on machine learning and image recognition to speed up listing creation, automatically identifying items and suggesting category, title, description and price from a photo or video, with an ambition to cut listing time from 30 seconds to three seconds. Other technology features include image-based search and a trading card scanner, escrow-based in-app payments, and integrated delivery and logistics options.

Go-to-market

Growth has been mobile-first and community-driven, with listings shareable to Facebook, Instagram, Telegram and WeChat, offline events such as the Carouselland indoor bazaar held annually since 2015, partnerships with local media and financial institutions, and acquisitions or mergers to enter and consolidate markets.

Individual consumers buying and selling preowned and new goods, plus small businesses, merchants, car dealers, property agents and home-services providers using paid seller tools.

Geography

Headquartered in Singapore at 79 Ayer Rajah Crescent, LaunchPad @ One-North. Operations and services span Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, with group platforms also in Vietnam (Chotot.com) and Myanmar (OneKyat).

History

After an initial investment from Quest Ventures, Carousell raised roughly $1 million in November 2013 from Rakuten with follow-on participation from Golden Gate Ventures and 500 Global, followed by a US$6 million round from Sequoia India in November 2014 and a $35 million Series B in August 2016. It began acquiring companies in 2016, buying used-car marketplace Caarly and taking on developers from Watch Over Me and Duriana, and expanded regionally into Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Australia. An $85 million Series C followed in May 2018, co-led by Rakuten Ventures and EDBI. In April 2019 Carousell acquired OLX Philippines in a deal with the OLX Group worth $56 million that lifted its valuation to $550 million, and in November 2019 it merged with Telenor's 701Search, valuing the company at more than US$850 million. A US$80 million investment from a Naver-led consortium valued the company at over US$900 million, and a US$100 million round led by STIC Investments in September 2021 took its valuation to US$1.1 billion. Talks to go public via a merger with L Catterton Asia Acquisition Corp, which could have valued the combined entity at up to US$1.5 billion, ended in May 2022.

Risks & controversies

Users have reported scams by fake sellers, and the Singapore Police Force said over 70% of e-commerce scams in 2018 took place on Carousell. In October 2020 a long-banned weight-loss product was reported to the Health Sciences Authority as being sold on Carousell and other platforms. In January 2022 a data leak exposed the personal data of more than 2.6 million users, including over 320,000 users in Hong Kong. App reviewers have flagged location filtering, image browsing and sales-tracking accuracy issues. The 2022 collapse of the SPAC merger talks, attributed to market volatility, difficulty arranging a PIPE and valuation concerns, left the planned public listing unrealised.
