Company profile

researched Aug 2026

Axie Infinity is a blockchain game in which players command teams of Axies β€” colourful, axolotl-like creatures represented as NFTs β€” in turn-based battles. The original game, referred to as Axie Classic, is built around 1v1 card-based combat in which each Axie has distinct abilities and players assemble teams and card combinations to climb arena and guild leaderboards. To start playing the original version, users had to purchase three Axies on the open market. The game is developed by Sky Mavis, a technology-focused game studio founded in early 2018 and headquartered in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

The ecosystem spans several products and titles, including Axie Infinity: Origin (a standalone, free-to-play, non-NFT entry point that grants players three free Axies), Classic, and Homeland, all distributed through a consolidated download page at app.axieinfinity.com/games after the Mavis Hub client was retired in November 2025. Supporting infrastructure includes the Ronin sidechain and its governance token, the AXS (Axie Infinity Shards) token with an associated staking dashboard covering AXS staking and land staking, the Ronin Name Service, the Smooth Love Potion (SLP) in-game token earned through daily play, and the Axie DAO. Sky Mavis's revenue has come primarily from a 4.25 percent fee charged on Axie NFT transactions.

Axie Infinity launched in 2020 and pioneered the play-to-earn model, in which players β€” notably in the Philippines and other developing markets β€” could at points earn more than local minimum wage from gameplay. The project became a cultural phenomenon during the 2021 bull market, generating fan songs, musicals, merchandise, clubs and a K-pop group called the Axie Sisters, before its token prices collapsed and the ecosystem was hit by the Ronin Validator Hack.

Founding story

Sky Mavis was founded in early 2018 by a team including Trung Thanh Nguyen (CEO), Aleksander Leonard Larsen (COO/chair), Tu Doan (art director and game designer, who designed the original Axies), Andy Ho (CTO) and Jeffrey Zirlin (growth lead). Trung had previously co-founded and served as CTO of Vietnamese e-commerce startup Lozi.vn at age 19 and later worked at Trusting Social and Anduin Transactions; Tu Doan also co-founded Lozi.vn. Andy Ho previously engineered at Anduin Transactions and interned at Google and PayPal.

Business model

Sky Mavis monetises the Axie Infinity ecosystem principally through a 4.25 percent fee on each transaction involving the game's Axie NFTs. Player-owned assets, including Axie NFTs and the AXS, RON and SLP tokens, circulate across the Ronin sidechain, with AXS holders able to stake tokens and land through a dedicated staking dashboard.

Transaction fees of 4.25 percent charged per Axie NFT trade constitute Sky Mavis's primary source of funds.

Traction

As of April 2022, Sky Mavis reported 2.6 million unique crypto addresses owning at least one Axie, down from a peak near 3 million in January 2022, and 2.2 million monthly players, down from a peak of 2.8 million. The Ronin ecosystem's total market capitalisation was then close to $5 billion, though most of that value was held in player-owned assets. Smooth Love Potion traded at roughly 2 cents in April 2022, down from a high of 34 cents the prior summer.

Latest developments

In November 2025 Sky Mavis ended support for the Mavis Hub desktop client, moving game discovery to the Ronin Discovery Page and blog and consolidating Axie titles β€” Origins, Classic and Homeland β€” onto a single download page. In early 2026, co-founder Jeff Zirlin said the project had been too cautious in 2025 and that it would take significantly larger risks in 2026, while warning that many web3 gaming studios would fail as funding tightened.

β–ΈFull profile β€” market position, technology, go-to-market, geography, history, risks & controversies

Market position

Axie Infinity was the defining title of the 2021 wave of blockchain gaming and pioneered play-to-earn, attracting millions of players before its tokens declined and the project became widely cited as a cautionary tale about web3 boom-and-bust cycles. Sky Mavis leadership maintains the project is continuing development.

Combination of turn-based tactical card battles with player-owned NFT creatures and tradable in-game tokens, operated on the company's own Ronin sidechain rather than a third-party chain, with a free-to-play, non-NFT entry version added to lower onboarding barriers.

Technology

Axie Infinity runs on Ronin, a sidechain built by Sky Mavis and bridged to Ethereum. Ronin originally operated with a set of nine validator nodes; following the March 2022 breach, Sky Mavis replaced its validators and announced an expansion to 21 distinct nodes with control split among partners, community members and other stakeholders. Ecosystem tokens include AXS (governance and staking), RON (Ronin governance) and Smooth Love Potion, alongside Axie NFTs and the Ronin Name Service. Game distribution previously ran through the Mavis Hub desktop client, launched in May 2020 and discontinued in November 2025 in favour of a web download page and the Ronin Discovery Page.

Go-to-market

Distribution has shifted from the Mavis Hub client to a centralized web download page for Axie titles and the Ronin Discovery Page and blog for wider Ronin network discovery. Axie Infinity: Origin was introduced as a free-to-play, NFT-free on-ramp intended to let new users experience the game before any crypto onboarding, with community structures such as guilds, guild wars and seasonal leaderboards supporting retention.

Consumer gamers and crypto users, including players in developing markets such as the Philippines who were drawn by play-to-earn income, NFT collectors and traders, and gaming guilds.

Geography

Headquartered in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, with a player base spread internationally; adoption was particularly strong in the Philippines. Business development activity has spanned the Asia Pacific region, including Vietnam, Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan.

History

Sky Mavis was founded in early 2018 as a technology-focused game studio in Ho Chi Minh City. Axie Infinity launched in 2020 β€” the same year the Mavis Hub distribution client debuted in May β€” and early versions of the game were, per co-founder Aleksander Larsen, low quality and simple, with the team taking considerably longer than commonly assumed to get the game working. The project peaked during the 2021 bull market. In March 2022 the Ronin Validator bridge was breached, removing over $625 million in crypto from the ecosystem; the Axie DAO treasury alone lost 56,000 ETH, about $180 million. Sky Mavis raised $150 million in April 2022 to help reimburse affected users and simultaneously launched the alpha of Axie Infinity: Origin. In November 2025 the Mavis Hub client was retired.

Risks & controversies

In March 2022 the Ronin sidechain validator network was compromised in what Sky Mavis described as an externally breached, socially engineered attack, draining over $625 million from the Axie Infinity ecosystem; five of nine validators were compromised, four of them controlled by Sky Mavis and a fifth by the Axie DAO via an unclosed backdoor. Sky Mavis attributed the root cause to its small validator set. Beyond the $150 million raised, roughly $475 million was still needed to make the marketplace whole, and the Axie DAO said it would wait two years for potential recovery before voting on the shortfall. Token prices fell sharply β€” AXS was down about 66 percent from its November 2021 peak as of April 2022 β€” and declining new-player inflows raised concerns of a downward spiral in an economy dependent on newcomer spending. The wider sector has since faced funding shortages, with co-founder Jeff Zirlin predicting further studio failures in 2026.
