Technology

The product is built around any-sync, a protocol that synchronises data across a peer-to-peer network with zero-knowledge, end-to-end encryption; users control their own keys and data is stored locally and offline-first. Information is modelled as a graph of linked objects composed of blocks (text, databases, kanban, calendar, custom Types). The desktop client (anytype-ts) is an Electron and TypeScript application that communicates with a Go-based core engine (anytype-heart) via generated gRPC/protobuf bindings; a web clipper browser extension and a web build are also part of the repository. An external gRPC-backed API and an "Agents" extensibility mechanism are supported, and the public API adds chat, file upload/download and markdown body patching endpoints.

History

Founded in early 2018, Anytype ran an Alpha release that involved more than 30,000 participants from professions including software development, nursing, city planning, pharmacy and policing. It accumulated a waitlist of more than 75,000 people ahead of its open Beta, which launched on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android. In August 2023, on the heels of the open Beta, the company announced a $13.4 million round led by Balderton Capital and opened its code repositories to its community, which had grown past 100,000 members. Development has continued since, including work on multiplayer and sharing features, a collaborative workspace, and a public developer API with releases documented through 2025.

Risks & controversies

Coverage of the 2023 round noted that Anytype's data model concepts require users to absorb new terminology and that the product was still distant from mass adoption. The same coverage raised the question of how a self-hosted, end-to-end-encrypted platform generates revenue, given that the architecture deliberately removes the provider from the user's data.
