Alimetry

Alimetry is a New Zealand digital health and diagnostics company that develops Gastric Alimetry, a non-invasive, radiation-free test that maps stomach function by measuring gastric myoelectrical activity from the skin surface, a technique the company calls Body Surface Gastric Mapping. The system combines a disposable adhesive array of 64 electrodes placed on the abdomen, a reader device that captures the signal, and a patient app used to log symptoms in real time during the test. A single outpatient session lasts about 4.5 hours, beginning with a 30-minute baseline recording followed by a standard meal, after which an automatically generated report is delivered to the treating clinician.

The test is positioned for patients with chronic gastric symptoms whose structural causes have been ruled out, including gastroparesis, reflux, chronic nausea and vomiting, functional dyspepsia, abdominal pain, cyclic vomiting syndrome, chronic bloating, post-meal discomfort and unexplained gastric symptoms. Alongside physiological data, the platform includes a Gut-Brain Wellbeing Survey that profiles mental health, so that gastric function, symptom experience and gut-brain factors are assessed together. Recorded gastric electrophysiology is transmitted to the cloud, where AI-based algorithms trained on large sets of test cases generate benchmarked, patient-specific results in the Gastric Alimetry Report. The company states it complies with HIPAA and GDPR and it has separate clinician-facing and pediatric clinician-facing offerings.

Contraindications and preparation requirements published by the company include fasting before the test, withholding medications that affect gastric emptying or GI motility, opioids, sedatives and certain other agents, and exclusion of patients with open abdominal wounds, fragile skin, or an inability to remain seated for the test duration; patients with a BMI over 35 are advised to discuss suitability with their physician.

Founding story

Armen Gharibans was completing a PhD in wearable devices at the University of California, San Diego when he met scientists from the Auckland Bioengineering Institute and became interested in Greg O'Grady's work on gastrointestinal physiology. He moved to New Zealand after O'Grady secured a grant in 2018, and the two co-founded Alimetry in 2019; Gharibans has credited O'Grady's prior medtech experience, including co-founding The Insides Company, and the support of the New Zealand research-commercialisation ecosystem as decisive in the company's formation.

Business model

Alimetry sells its diagnostic system to hospitals, GI centers and private clinics, where clinicians administer the Gastric Alimetry test; the model combines a wearable reader with disposable adhesive electrode arrays (consumables) and cloud-based automated report generation. Establishment of an American Medical Association Category III CPT code for Body Surface Gastric Mapping enables data collection toward reimbursement and use in both hospital and private clinic settings.

Revenue is derived from supplying the Gastric Alimetry system and its disposable consumables to clinical providers who perform the test; a CPT III reimbursement code covering the test supports billing and reimbursement pathways in the United States.

Traction

More than 30 clinical studies have been completed and over 50 peer-reviewed publications support the technology. Over 40 hospitals and clinics worldwide had signed on to use the device as of late 2024, and the company reported more than 2,500 patients served as of March 2024. Alimetry has obtained four FDA clearances as of 2024 plus a further FDA clearance for an AI analysis system in February 2026, clinical clearance in the United Kingdom and New Zealand, TGA approval in Australia, an AMA Category III CPT code, and ISO/IEC 27001 certification.

Latest developments

In August 2025 Alimetry announced TGA approval for Australia, followed by ISO/IEC 27001 certification in September 2025 and the appointment of Karen O'Regan as Chief Business Officer in November 2025. In February 2026 the company announced FDA clearance for an AI analysis system for gastric function, and in July 2026 it reported that an international gastroenterology expert working group had published a consensus framework. The company's GLP-1 related research received UK press coverage in August 2025.
