Vijay Shekhar Sharma founded Paytm in 2010 and made it India's best-known digital-payments brand, with its usage inflecting sharply after the 2016 demonetisation. Backed by Alibaba, Ant and SoftBank, Paytm listed in 2021 in what was then India's largest IPO; the stock fell steeply afterwards and the payments bank was wound down by the regulator in 2024. He grew up in Aligarh and learned English from tech magazines.
