Ruben Daniels shipped a real development environment inside a browser years before that was normal, and sold it to Amazon. Cloud9 grew out of Ajax.org, the Amsterdam open-source group behind the Ace code editor, and was incorporated in 2010; it gave developers a full server-side workspace — terminal, debugger, git, multiple runtimes and real-time collaborative editing — from a browser tab. He raised $5.5 million from Accel and Atlassian in 2011, later added Balderton, and by the time Amazon Web Services acquired the company in July 2016 it served hundreds of thousands of developers from San Francisco and Amsterdam. It became AWS Cloud9. He went on to found Memri, an open-source personal-data project, and now works on regenerative and digital-sovereignty ventures. He is no relation to the esports organisation of the same name.
