Richard Liu, also known as Liu Qiangdong, founded JD.com in 1998 as a magneto-optical shop and pivoted it online during the 2003 SARS epidemic, building China's largest self-operated e-commerce company on its own nationwide logistics network — a costly bet that became its defining advantage over marketplace rivals.
