Jan Koum co-founded WhatsApp in 2009 and sold it to Facebook in 2014 for about $19B, still among the largest acquisitions of a venture-backed private company ever. He grew up in Ukraine and emigrated to California on food stamps, worked at Yahoo for nine years alongside co-founder Brian Acton, and famously ran WhatsApp with no advertising and a skeleton engineering team serving hundreds of millions of users. He left Facebook in 2018.
