H.R. McMaster is the Fouad and Michelle Ajami Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution and Bernard and Susan Liautaud Fellow at Stanford University's Freeman Spogli Institute, where he also lectures at the Graduate School of Business. He served as the 26th Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs and retired as a Lieutenant General from the U.S. Army in 2018 after 34 years of service, including combat command roles in Iraq and Afghanistan and positions overseeing Army training and capabilities development. McMaster holds a PhD in military history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has authored two books on military history and strategy, along with numerous essays and articles published in outlets including Foreign Affairs, The Atlantic, and the Wall Street Journal.
