David Packard co-founded Hewlett-Packard with Bill Hewlett in a Palo Alto garage in 1939 on $538 of capital, creating both the archetypal Silicon Valley origin story and the management philosophy known as the HP Way. He served as US Deputy Secretary of Defense from 1969 to 1971 and left the bulk of his fortune to the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. He died in 1996.
