Investment thesis
CIAI focuses on identifying technology-owning businesses located outside Canada whose owners are willing to move their operations to Canada under the Startup Visa (SUV) Program. Target businesses must own a technology that provides a unique solution, offer value far exceeding cost, address a significant market, and have a defensible IP strategy. The firm conducts due diligence using NACO checklists, negotiates deal structure and valuation, and typically invests at least $75,000 CAD via one or more members, favoring convertible debt or convertible preferred equity to limit downside risk. It sources deals through a long-standing network of immigration lawyers, consultants, universities, and technology institutions across more than 20 countries, and provides ongoing support once businesses establish in Canada.
