BRII is a government-run grant program that invites Australian startups and small-to-medium enterprises to solve specific public-sector challenges. Selected applicants can receive a feasibility grant of up to $100,000 to test their proposed solution, and those who successfully demonstrate feasibility may be invited to compete for a further grant of up to $1 million to build a proof of concept. Challenge rounds have spanned themes such as cyber security, renewables and low emissions, and workplace relations. The initiative provides non-dilutive funding aimed at bringing novel technologies to bear on government problems.
