What is a fund of funds?

A fund of funds raises capital and invests it as an LP across many venture funds, giving its own investors diversified exposure and access to managers they could not reach directly. Some also co-invest directly alongside their managers.

The cost is a second layer of fees; the value is selection, access, and diversification — particularly for institutions too small to build a fund portfolio themselves, and as an early LP base for emerging managers.
