Company profile

researched Aug 2026

United Family Healthcare (UFH, 和睦家医疗) is a private, premium international hospital and clinic network in China. Founded in 1997 by Roberta Lipson (Li Bijing), it is described as China's first foreign-funded private hospital group. The network provides medical services across the full lifecycle — preventive care, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation — organized around a family medicine/primary care core with a continuity-of-care model. Service lines span more than 30 specialties (37 specialties per the company's own site), including women's and children's health, general medicine and surgery, oncology, cardiovascular medicine, neurosurgery, imaging and diagnostics, rehabilitation, reproductive medicine and IVF, home health and managed care.

As of December 2025 the network (including Hong Kong's Heal Medical) comprised 11 hospitals and 24 clinics in Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Tianjin, Qingdao and Boao. Staffing includes over 600 full-time physicians from 25 countries and regions, more than 1,000 part-time experts and a nursing team of more than 1,000. Facilities named on the company site include Beijing United Family Hospital, Beijing United Family Hospital of Integrative Medicine, United Family Women's & Children's Hospital, Beijing United Family Rehabilitation Hospital, United Family New Hope Oncology Center, multiple Beijing clinics, Shanghai United Family Hospital (Changning, Pudong and Jing'an campuses) plus Shanghai clinics, Guangzhou United Family Hospital, Tianjin United Family Hospital, Qingdao United Family Hospital, Shenzhen New Frontier United Family Hospital, and in Hong Kong HEAL Medical, HEAL Oncology, HEAL Fertility, HEAL Aesthetic and the Hong Kong Integrated Oncology Centre.

The group also operates Centers of Excellence covering clinical research, disaster and emergency medicine education, primary care practice and education, and clinical learning, and runs United Family International Medical Services (UFHIMS), a cross-border navigation service connecting patients to overseas institutions in the U.S., Japan and Hong Kong for oncology, cardiology, neurology and other rare or complex conditions.

Founding story

United Family Healthcare traces its origins to the Sino-US Mutual Benefit Company, co-founded in 1981 by Roberta Lipson (Li Bijing) with partners. In 1997 Lipson founded Beijing United Family Hospital, described as China's first foreign-funded private hospital, establishing the group's position in private international healthcare in China.

Business model

UFH operates an owned and managed network of private hospitals and clinics serving self-pay, commercially insured and corporate patients, complemented by an asset-light hospital management strategy — under the 2019 New Frontier transaction UFH was to be given the exclusive right to manage New Frontier Group's 64,000 sq. meter flagship hospital in Shenzhen. The group also sells corporate and group health solutions to employers, a membership program (UFH Prime), telehealth and online medical services, home care, rehabilitation and a fee-based international medical navigation/second-opinion service.

Revenue is generated from patient care delivered across hospitals, clinics, home health and managed care services, together with corporate/group health packages, membership subscriptions and cross-border medical services. Company revenue was expected to reach approximately RMB 2.5 billion by 2019 with roughly RMB 469 million in adjusted EBITDA; Tianjin United Family Hospital alone reported 2023 revenue of RMB 178 million. In August 2025 United Family New City Hospital was admitted as a Shanghai medical-insurance designated institution and launched a combined "medical insurance + commercial insurance + out-of-pocket" payment model.

Traction

As of the 2019 transaction disclosure, UFH had 9 hospitals (two under construction), 14 clinics and more than 700 licensed beds, with about 670,000 expected outpatient visits and about 12,000 inpatient visits for the year, revenue of approximately RMB 2.5 billion (13.3% five-year CAGR) and expected adjusted EBITDA of RMB 469 million (10.5% five-year CAGR). By December 2025 the network had grown to 11 hospitals and 24 clinics with over 600 full-time doctors. Tianjin United Family Hospital recorded 50,000 outpatient and emergency visits and RMB 178 million in revenue in 2023.

Latest developments

Recent activity includes designation of Beijing United Family Hospital as a da Vinci robot demonstration center (August 2024) and installation of a second da Vinci system at its Dongcheng campus (September 2024); an HPV cervical cancer screening and treatment mission in Qinghai's Yushu prefecture from 24 June to 3 July 2024; inclusion of United Family New City Hospital in Shanghai's medical insurance system in August 2025 with a combined insurance and out-of-pocket payment model; the opening of HEAL Fertility in Hong Kong; New Frontier Group's acquisition of the Hong Kong Integrated Oncology Centre; a partnership with Teleflex in urology; and the siting of a Mayo Clinic representative office at UFH. A planned Beijing United Family International Hospital is targeted for 2029/2030 as a research and innovation flagship. Bloomberg reported in March 2024 that the company had sounded out investors about raising several hundred million dollars and might seek to relist.

Full profile — market position, technology, go-to-market, geography, history, risks & controversies

Market position

At the time of the 2019 New Frontier transaction, UFH was presented as the largest integrated private healthcare provider in China by revenue and the top-ranked brand among high-end private hospitals, and the only private provider operating hospitals and clinics in all four tier-1 cities plus three tier-2 cities. All of its hospitals held Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation. In November 2022 it received HRoot's "2022 Greater China Excellent Employer Award."

UFH combines international hospital standards — all hospitals JCI-accredited — with an internationally recruited physician base (over 600 full-time doctors from 25 countries and regions covering 37 specialties), a primary-care-anchored continuity-of-care model spanning prevention through rehabilitation, and a nationwide footprint spanning all four tier-1 cities and several tier-2 cities. Its "1 + X" strategy pairs core general hospitals as centers of clinical excellence and research with specialty hospitals, clinics, online services, rehabilitation and home care.

Technology

UFH invests in advanced clinical technology, including the da Vinci Si and da Vinci Xi robotic surgical systems, single-port surgical robots, the Ion robotic bronchoscopy platform, and high-field MRI. Beijing United Family Hospital introduced the da Vinci Surgical System in 2015, was designated in August 2024 as a "da Vinci Surgical Robot China Non-Public Medical Institution Demonstration Center," and in September 2024 installed a second da Vinci system at its Dongcheng campus, becoming the first non-public medical institution in Beijing with dual da Vinci systems. The group is also pursuing AI- and data-enabled transformation across clinical decision support, medical imaging, records management and operational analytics, alongside telehealth and digital patient platforms.

Go-to-market

The group markets through its hospital and clinic network and brand, corporate and group health solutions for employers, the nationwide UFH Prime membership program, telehealth and online platforms, and international medical concierge services. It also pursues clinical and academic partnerships — including with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Mayo Clinic (whose representative office is located at UFH), Teleflex, Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Reproductive Hospital Affiliated to Shandong University — plus public-health outreach such as HPV cervical cancer screening missions.

Patients seeking premium, internationally styled private healthcare in China — expatriate and affluent domestic families, women and children, oncology, cardiology and neurology patients, and patients needing rehabilitation or assisted reproduction. The group also serves corporate clients purchasing employee health management programs, and patients requiring cross-border or overseas treatment coordination.

Geography

Facilities in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Tianjin, Qingdao, Boao and Hong Kong; 11 hospitals and 24 clinics as of December 2025. Greater Bay Area operations are being developed jointly with Heal Medical and the Hong Kong Integrated Oncology Centre as a cross-border system focused on innovative therapies, oncology and assisted reproduction. The international medical services arm partners with institutions in the United States and Japan.

History

Roberta Lipson (Li Bijing) and partners co-founded the Sino-US Mutual Benefit Company, UFH's predecessor, in 1981. Beijing United Family Hospital opened in 1997, followed by Shanghai United Family Hospital in Changning District in 2004, a Beijing expansion in 2009, and Tianjin United Family Hospital in December 2011. A reproductive cooperation project with the Reproductive Hospital Affiliated to Shandong University began at Qingdao United Family Hospital in October 2016, and the group's 20th anniversary was marked in Beijing in October 2017. Guangzhou United Family Hospital (with Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine) was completed in May 2018, and Shanghai United Family Puxi Hospital moved to a larger 19,000 sq m site in October 2019. On 19 December 2019 UFH was acquired by New Frontier Corporation, a NYSE-listed SPAC; the combined company was renamed New Frontier Health and traded under the ticker "NFH." Carl Wu (Wu Qinan) became CEO of United Family Healthcare on 20 July 2022.
