Founding story
Tubi was founded by Farhad Massoudi and Thomas Ahn Hicks of AdRise in San Francisco and launched in 2014 as a free service under the name Tubi TV. Massoudi, who holds a BS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley, had founded AdRise in 2010 to provide advertising solutions for streaming media; AdRise partnered with Hasbro Studios on a free ad-supported streaming app for Roku before Tubi was built as a content business on top of the ad network.
Business model
Tubi offers its catalog to viewers at no subscription cost and monetizes through advertising. Its parent group also operates AdRise, an advertising network that spans Tubi and other Fox video inventory, and Tubi sells advertising directly to brands (including Super Bowl advertising placements) and via partners such as Bell Media, which handles Canadian ad sales.
Advertising-supported (AVOD/FAST) streaming; revenue was estimated at $700 million in 2023. Fox has cited Tubi as a recurring revenue driver in quarterly earnings, reporting upfront revenue more than tripling in its first year under Fox and ad revenue up 25% year over year in Fox's fiscal Q2 reported in February 2023.
Traction
Reported monthly active users grew from over 20 million (June 2019) to 33 million (September 2020), 80 million (May 2024), 97 million (January 2025), 100 million (June 2025) and 110 million (August 2026). Users streamed 132 million hours of content as of September 2019, and Fox reported total viewing time up 41% year over year in its quarter reported in February 2023.
Latest developments
Anjali Sud leads the company as CEO. Reported monthly active users reached 110 million in August 2026. In February 2025 Tubi streamed Super Bowl LIX and parent Fox acquired podcast and media company Red Seat Ventures, placed under Tubi Media Group. In October 2025 Tubi announced a partnership with Bell Media covering Canadian advertising sales and co-development of programming.

History
Launched April 1, 2014 as Tubi TV. In May 2017 the company raised $20 million from Jump Capital, Danhua Capital, Cota Capital and Foundation Capital. It signed a distribution deal with NBCUniversal in February 2019 covering 400 TV episodes and films, said in 2019 it would nearly double 2018 licensed-content spending to close to $100 million, arrived on Vizio SmartCast in September 2019 and launched Tubi Kids in October 2019. Fox Corporation announced its acquisition on March 17, 2020 for $440 million cash, completing the deal on April 20, 2020, with Tubi continuing as a separate subsidiary. Fox acquired MarVista Entertainment in December 2021 to bolster Tubi's library and made-for-TV film production. Content deals followed with CJ ENM (December 2022) and Warner Bros. Discovery (January 2023 for 11 FAST channels; December 2023 for nine more channels plus DC titles). Tubi ran the "Interface Interruption" ad during Super Bowl LVII in February 2023 and reported becoming the first free streaming service to account for 1% of total U.S. TV viewing time that month. In April 2023 Fox formed the Tubi Media Group under CEO Paul Cheesbrough and founder Farhad Massoudi departed; Anjali Sud was named CEO in July 2023. Tubi aired Super Bowl LIX in February 2025, and in October 2025 announced a partnership with Bell Media in Canada.
Risks & controversies
Tubi's "Interface Interruption" Super Bowl LVII commercial, which simulated a viewer switching away from the game, drew mixed reactions with critics including The Mary Sue and Wanda Sykes calling it dangerous. In May 2024 Tubi sued law firm Keller Postman, alleging it manufactured tens of thousands of meritless discrimination claims to coerce a settlement. In March 2025 Fox Sports Mexico took legal action against Fox Corporation and Grupo Pachuca over alleged bidding-preference rights for Club León and Pachuca Liga MX home matches, asking a judge to halt their broadcast on Tubi; Fox Corp. and Grupo Pachuca responded that Grupo Lauman had not paid for the clubs' television rights and that the matches would continue streaming on Tubi. The business also depends on advertising demand and on content licensing renewals with third-party studios.
