SPECTRAINTEL (주식회사 스펙트라인텔) is a South Korean deep-tech company that develops field-configured, ultra-compact imaging hyperspectral instruments and delivers them as a single package together with spectral databases and user-facing analysis software. Hyperspectral imaging captures dozens to hundreds of wavelength channels in one image; by analysing the spectral pattern of each pixel, the system aims to distinguish material type and condition rather than only shape, position or temperature. The company frames this as four-dimensional sensing — time, space and wavelength — used to determine what a target is, what state it is in, and whether it shows signs of danger, remotely and without contact.

The company organises its offering around five application areas: astronomy (miniature spectrographs mountable on small telescopes for amateur astronomy, research and public astronomy education), industry (remote, non-contact detection of material leaks and changes at industrial sites), surveillance (drone-mounted spectrometers for detecting state changes and camouflage over wide or hard-to-reach areas), early disaster monitoring (drone-mounted instruments analysing wildfire flame and smoke characteristics to assess spread and risk indicators), and satellite payloads (hyperspectral instruments for CubeSats to add material identification capability to satellite imagery, supporting environmental and disaster data services). Its first product is ASTRO-HSI, a hyperspectral adapter that connects to standard astronomical telescopes to acquire wavelength-specific images of celestial bodies along with pixel-level spectral data.

Planned application expansion proceeds stepwise from missile and launch-vehicle identification into industrial non-destructive testing, monitoring of hazardous environmental substances, and foreign-body inspection in food and agriculture.

Founding story

SPECTRAINTEL was founded by CEO Dongho You (also transliterated Dongho Yu), a student in the Department of Physics at KAIST. Since high school he has pursued the question of identifying distant targets through remote signals, with research spanning nuclear fusion plasma, exoplanets, launch vehicles and space objects. His projects include a wide-field exoplanet search system built on amateur astronomical data, a remote non-contact spectroscopy-based launch-vehicle identification system, and an optical surveillance system for detecting and tracking unidentified space objects. Before founding the company he spent roughly 16 months as first author on research at the Center for Planetary Atmospheres of the Institute for Basic Science (IBS), tracking variations in an unidentified absorber in Venus's upper atmosphere using an interpretable mathematical model rather than machine learning, and presented the findings at the BACO-25 joint assembly.

Latest developments

On 9 July 2026 the company announced an undisclosed seed round from Kakao Ventures, to be used to advance its ultra-compact hyperspectral imaging prototype and recruit core talent, while continuing development of the ASTRO-HSI adapter.
