QuantrolOx

QuantrolOx is an Oxford spinout that develops automated, machine-learning-based control software for quantum technologies, used to tune, stabilise and optimise qubits — the fundamental building blocks of quantum computers. Its product, Quantum EDGE, automates the tuning and optimisation of superconducting quantum computers, targeting qubit bring-up, characterization and testing steps that the company says currently take 1-2 days per qubit as an industry benchmark, and simplifying tasks such as randomized benchmarking. The company positions the software as allowing a single expert to manage multiple quantum computers, versus present control methods that it says require three to four experts to manage ten qubits.

Technically, the software reads out data from the quantum computer and, at microsecond intervals, decides what pulse shapes the arbitrary waveform generator should send back, forming a fast closed-loop automation that learns in real time from the state of the machine. Integration sits close to the control hardware at the FPGA level rather than at higher software layers. The approach is described as technology-agnostic in principle, though the company initially targeted solid-state qubits: algorithms were validated in university settings on spin qubits over several years and subsequently applied to superconducting qubits. The product line has expanded beyond core tuning software to include an SDK, development kits with QPU vendors, and a Quantum EDGE Academy training programme, alongside an open-architecture quantum platform announced under the name VIDYAQAR.

QuantrolOx's underlying research base is reflected in peer-reviewed publications by its founders and staff on machine learning for quantum device measurement and tuning, including papers in Nature Communications, npj Quantum Information, New Journal of Physics and Nature Reviews Materials.
