Alumni Q&A
- How did your company get started? (i.e., How did the founders meet? How did you come up with the idea? How did you decide to be a founder?)
- Founders Artem and Maksym, childhood friends and university classmates who both worked as data engineers, started NewsCatcher in February 2020. They launched a beta in April 2020 using AWS credits from YC Startup School, released a V1 on RapidAPI in June 2020, and gained early sign-ups after a Python package they built spread on Reddit. They joined TinySeed in early 2021 at $3,000 MRR, grew to $25,000 MRR within a year, and were accepted into YC in May 2022 with $300,000 ARR, reaching $450,000 ARR by Demo Day. Artem temporarily left to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine during this period.
- How did you decide to apply to Y Combinator? What was your experience applying, going through the batch, and fundraising at demo day?
- In early 2021 the founders applied to TinySeed, Alchemist Accelerator, and YC for a third time at $3,000 MRR, accepting TinySeed. After hiring three team members and growing to $25,000 MRR, they reapplied to YC and were accepted in May 2022 at roughly $300,000 ARR, reaching $450,000 ARR by Demo Day. After the batch, Artem raised funding over two days from Uncommon Capital, led by Jamie Quint, along with support from YC alumni.
- What's the history of your company from getting started until the present day? What were the big inflection points?
- NewsCatcher was founded in February 2020 by two data engineers, launched a beta in April and a V1 on RapidAPI in June 2020 with its first paying customers. It joined TinySeed in early 2021, was accepted into YC in May 2022, reached $1.13 million ARR in 2023, and set a 2024 target of $3.7 million ARR while hiring its first account executives.
- What is the core problem you are solving? Why is this a big problem? What made you decide to work on it?
- The founders, both data engineers, built NewsCatcher to provide programmatic access to real-time news data that is otherwise difficult to gather manually for uses such as market analysis and trend tracking. They report aggregating news from over 70,000 sources.
