Company profile

researched Aug 2026

Metaplex is a tokenization platform and set of onchain protocols on Solana that spans asset issuance and secondary trading. On the issuance side, its programs let developers and creators create fungible SPL tokens with metadata, NFTs (via the Core standard and compressed NFTs through Bubblegum), and other asset types including real-world assets, and to run token generation events and fair launches through the Genesis protocol. On the trading side, the Metaplex App lets users discover live token sales, track trending assets and watchlists, and trade different asset types; token sale liquidity auto-migrates from Metaplex into Raydium CPMM pools, with Spotlight customers eligible for CLMM pools and more advanced liquidity configurations.

The platform is supported by a developer stack that includes the Token Metadata, Core, Bubblegum v2, Core Candy Machine, Core Candy Guard, Genesis, MPL-Hybrid, Inscriptions and Agent Registry onchain programs, plus the DAS API for querying Solana digital assets, the Umi JavaScript client, a CLI, and IDL/testing tools such as Shank and Amman. Earlier programs including Candy Machine, Auction House, Token Auth Rules, Fusion, Hydra, Gumdrop and Token Entangler are marked deprecated, as are the Sugar and Solita tools and the mobile SDKs. A newer area of the product covers AI agents: documentation describes minting an agent, registering an agent identity PDA on the Metaplex agent registry, reading and verifying agent identity onchain, delegating agent execution, launching a token from an agent's onchain wallet, and agent commerce and financing.

Governance and economics involve the MPLX token, the Metaplex DAO and the Metaplex Foundation. Each month 50% of the prior month's protocol fees are used to buy back MPLX for the DAO; in October 2025 the protocol generated $2.0M in fees and $1.1M was used to repurchase 5.3M MPLX. The Foundation and the DAO together hold more than 40% of total MPLX supply, and the Foundation states it has more than three years of operating runway. Metaplex maintains open-source repositories under the metaplex-foundation GitHub organization.

Business model

Metaplex operates onchain protocols that charge fees on activity: asset creation and minting through Token Metadata, Core and Bubblegum, and token launches through Genesis. Protocol revenue reached $2.0M in October 2025 ($1.6M Token Metadata, $370K Genesis, $72K Core), with cumulative protocol fees surpassing $45 million to date. Fifty percent of each month's protocol fees are allocated to buying back MPLX for the Metaplex DAO. A Spotlight program offers hands-on launch support to selected projects, while permissionless bonding-curve launches are open to any creator with creator fee revenue accruing on the curve.

Protocol fees earned on token and NFT issuance (Token Metadata, Core, Bubblegum) and on token launches via Genesis; creator fees accrue on permissionless bonding-curve launches. Revenue has historically been concentrated in a small number of integrators, with Pump.Fun contributing 44%, 60% and 45% of total revenue in August, September and October 2025 respectively, after peaking at 86% in January 2025.

Traction

Genesis generated over $1.1M in revenue since its July 2025 launch and accounted for 18% of October 2025 protocol revenue, its highest share since inception. October 2025 launches included PlaySolana ($PLAY), whose fixed-price presale sold out in minutes, raising over $2.6M (13.2K SOL) from more than 1,600 participants for 150M tokens, and dm.fun ($FUN), which sold $1.5M (8.1K SOL) to over 1,500 participants; Beamable Network ($BMB) followed in early November 2025 with $1.3M (8,050 SOL) from 2,155 backers. Published case studies cite Collector Crypt ($3.4M raised, $68M FDV at launch, $1B+ 30-day volume), DefiTuna ($2.5M raised, $50M FDV, sold out in four minutes), Portals ($600K raised, $87.5M FDV, ~$900M 30-day volume) and a 48-hour Exotic Markets unified price auction. RainFi added support for previously Genesis-launched tokens including $EXO, $GOATED, $PORTALS and $CARDS. In October 2025, creators minted over 4M digital assets including 3.0M compressed NFTs. The main GitHub repository has about 3.4k stars and 6k forks.

Latest developments

Genesis, a framework for onchain token offerings and fair launches, was announced in July 2025 and remains in alpha. In October 2025 the Metaplex CLI added the ability to update Core plugins from the command line, Umi Kit Adapters enabled type conversion between @solana/kit and Umi, and localized Japanese and Korean documentation launched. On 7 November 2025 Pump.Fun disclosed that its Mayhem Mode would mint tokens via SPL Token-22 instead of Metaplex Token Metadata, effective 12 November 2025; the share of Pump.Fun daily token launches using Token Metadata subsequently fell below 15%, and the Foundation expects a near-term revenue decline. The Metaplex App, for discovering, trading and launching tokens with Metaplex protocols, was announced in February 2026, and a monthly round-up was published in August 2026. Documentation covers an expanding AI agent product line, including agent minting, registry, finance and commerce.

β–ΈFull profile β€” market position, technology, go-to-market, history, risks & controversies

Market position

Metaplex describes itself as the leading tokenization platform on Solana and states its tokenization protocol is used for 99% of token and NFT issuance on the network. Reported scale includes over 1 billion transactions powered, more than 1 billion digital assets created, $14B+ cumulative trading volume, $13M+ primary sale value across 9 project token sales and $470M+ combined FDV. In October 2025, roughly 420K unique wallets authorized Metaplex-powered transactions and 766K Token Metadata assets were created, bringing cumulative assets minted to over 960M and cumulative Core mints past 4M. Raydium is named as its DEX partner.

Combines issuance and secondary trading in a single platform, with launch liquidity automatically migrating to Raydium pools. Genesis offers multiple configurable sale mechanics β€” launch pool with early-deposit bonuses and late-withdrawal penalties intended to eliminate sniping and a graduation minimum with refunds, fixed-price sale with optional allowlist, unified price auction with a single onchain clearing price, and a bonding curve that graduates to Raydium β€” while projects retain control of tokenomics and sale terms. Metaplex also points to entrenched ecosystem usage of its asset standards and provenance data.

Technology

Metaplex publishes Solana onchain programs including Token Metadata (SPL token creation with onchain metadata), Core (an NFT standard with a composable plugin system), Bubblegum v1/v2 for compressed NFTs, Core Candy Machine and Core Candy Guard launchpad programs, Genesis for token launches via bonding curves and other sale formats, MPL-Hybrid for swapping NFT traits for fungible tokens, Inscription for writing permanent data into Solana state, and an Agent Registry for onchain agent identity and execution delegation. Developer tooling includes the DAS API, the Umi JavaScript client, a CLI, Shank for IDL generation from Rust programs, and Amman for local validator testing. The main GitHub repository directory lists Rust programs published to crates.io plus JavaScript, iOS (Swift) and Android (Kotlin) SDKs, with autogenerated client libraries produced by Solita.

Go-to-market

Self-serve developer adoption through documentation, SDKs, CLI and open-source programs, complemented by the Metaplex App for issuers and traders. For token launches, Metaplex runs an application-based Spotlight path providing co-marketing across the Metaplex ecosystem, partner introductions, sale configuration and custom launch pages, SDK integration and liquidity migration support, alongside a permissionless bonding-curve path requiring no Spotlight slot. Ecosystem programs include the Metaplex Earn liquidity incentive campaign on Kamino and localized documentation launched in Japanese and Korean with Superteam Japan and Superteam Korea.

Two sides: issuers β€” developers, creators and project teams launching tokens, NFTs and real-world assets on Solana, including gaming, DeFi and consumer app teams β€” and investors and traders who discover live token sales and trade onchain assets through the Metaplex App.

History

Metaplex's programs and SDKs are maintained by the Metaplex Foundation, whose GitHub directory covers its Rust programs, JavaScript, iOS and Android SDKs and tooling. The Genesis token-launch protocol was released in July 2025, positioning the protocol beyond an asset standard toward a broader platform for what the Foundation calls Internet Capital Markets on Solana. The Metaplex App followed in February 2026, adding discovery and trading alongside issuance. Governance and treasury activity run through the Metaplex DAO and the MPLX token, with monthly buybacks funded by protocol fees.

Risks & controversies

Revenue concentration: Pump.Fun accounted for 44%, 60% and 45% of total protocol revenue in August, September and October 2025 and peaked at 86% in January 2025. Its November 2025 switch to SPL Token-22 for Mayhem Mode minting cut the share of its daily launches using Metaplex Token Metadata to under 15%, and the Foundation expects a significant near-term revenue decline, though it says it retains more than three years of operating runway and requires no significant change to operating plans. Broader exposure to a slowdown in memecoin activity is also cited. Genesis remains in alpha, and a number of legacy programs and tools (Candy Machine, Auction House, Token Auth Rules, Fusion, Hydra, Gumdrop, Token Entangler, Sugar, Solita, mobile SDKs) are deprecated.
