Lynk is one of several ventures competing in the emerging direct-to-smartphone satellite market alongside SpaceX/T-Mobile and AST SpaceMobile; analysts cited by SpaceNews have said the market could be worth more than $100 billion, though regulatory and financing hurdles remain. Lynk and Omnispace were named the Mobile Satellite Users Association's 2026 'Mobile Satellite Innovation Company to Watch.'

Technology

Satellites acting as 'cell-towers-in-space' that communicate over cellular spectrum directly with standard, unmodified mobile handsets, requiring no special device hardware. Lynk states it achieved the first two-way connection between a satellite cell tower and a standard mobile phone on Earth, and iterates rapidly through short satellite development cycles. As of early 2025 it had launched five small satellites providing intermittent texting and low-bandwidth services, with a stated long-term plan for a 5,000-satellite constellation built in-house. The combined Elveo network is described as multi-band and multi-orbit, using S-band spectrum with advanced on-board processing and networking.

Indirect, partner-led distribution via agreements with mobile network operators, supported by field trials and regulatory approvals in individual markets — examples include tests with Smart/PLDT in the Philippines, OPT-NC in New Caledonia, and an FCC-approved 900 MHz test with Anterix. The company also recruits flagship carriers, partners and suppliers directly through its site.

History

Lynk Global developed and demonstrated direct-to-standard-phone satellite connectivity and obtained FCC licensing for commercial service. A proposed merger with Slam Corp, a Nasdaq-listed SPAC led by Alex Rodriguez, was pursued from a February 2024 investor presentation onward; most Slam Corp investors redeemed shares rather than roll into Lynk, leaving the SPAC trust at $23 million by December 2024, and the parties had until March 25, 2025 to close under an extended deadline. In February 2025 Lynk disclosed Series B funding of more than $85 million with plans to raise $215 million in total. In October 2025 Lynk and Omnispace announced plans to merge; the merger completed in August 2026, launching the combined company as Elveo Mobile, with SES continuing as a strategic partner and investor.

Risks & controversies

The planned SPAC combination with Slam Corp was undermined by heavy investor redemptions that cut the shell's trust to $23 million by December 2024, leaving Lynk dependent on additional capital — including a planned $110 million PIPE and a Series B targeting $215 million — to fund constellation scale-up. Lynk did not respond to a SpaceNews request for comment on the February 2025 filing. Competitive pressure from SpaceX/T-Mobile and AST SpaceMobile, plus regulatory and financing hurdles cited for the D2D market generally, are additional risks.
