Hertzwell

Hertzwell is a Singapore-based radar company founded in 2017 that develops hyper-resolution 3D imaging radar intended for persistent object detection and identification in autonomous vehicles and other smart machines. Its stated approach is to adapt high-resolution radar technology used in the aerospace industry for automotive use, addressing what the founders describe as radar's principal weakness relative to LiDAR: insufficient resolution to distinguish between obstacles. Because aerospace radar components are too large for ground vehicles, the company applied miniaturisation techniques to produce a prototype described in 2019 as roughly the size of an iPhone, alongside other methods to improve range and resolution.

SGInnovate describes the company as building a low-powered radar system able to track machine movement and human gestures at millimetre-scale precision, positioning it for applications spanning self-driving cars, industrial robots and VR/AR. Hertzwell also uses deep learning software to help customers classify detected obstacles such as pedestrians, bicycles and trucks. Management framed the product roadmap as initially complementing LiDAR, with a longer-term aim of a sensor stack in which a camera plus Hertzwell radar would be sufficient for autonomous vehicles.
