Company profile

researched Aug 2026

Grafana Labs develops an observability platform built around the open-source Grafana project and delivered as a managed service, Grafana Cloud. The platform ingests and correlates telemetry signals — logs, metrics, traces and profiles — and presents them through dashboards, data visualization, alerting and incident response workflows. The company positions the product as OpenTelemetry-native and built on open standards such as OpenTelemetry and Prometheus, with hundreds of plugins and integrations intended to connect existing tools and data sources rather than replace them.

The product portfolio spans full-stack observability, application observability, Kubernetes monitoring, frontend observability, database observability, infrastructure and cloud observability, site reliability, digital experience monitoring, synthetic monitoring, performance and load testing (k6), and incident response and management. A more recent layer of AI-oriented capabilities includes Grafana Assistant for interpreting production telemetry, Investigations for root cause analysis, and Agent Observability for evaluating production AI agents. A cost-management suite, Adaptive Telemetry, is described as identifying data worth retaining and aggregating the rest.

Grafana Labs also maintains an ecosystem of community plugins. Following the acquisition of Volkov Labs (announced publicly in community discussion in September 2025), Grafana Labs said it would take over maintenance and development of the Business Suite / business intelligence plugins originally created by Volkov Labs, transferring the repositories into Grafana's own repo, initially without new features, and later extending maintenance support through the end of 2026.

Business model

Commercial open source: the Grafana project and related open source components are freely available, while Grafana Labs monetizes a hosted service, Grafana Cloud, offered in tiered plans including a "Free Forever" plan and paid plans described as scaling to different organization sizes.

Subscription plans for Grafana Cloud, ranging from a free tier to paid tiers; the company also markets cost-based value framing around telemetry data volume via its Adaptive Telemetry suite.

Traction

Marketed as used by organizations ranging from startups to the Fortune 500, with customer references including BlackRock, Pegasystems, Lovable, LATAM Airlines and Delivery Hero, and an active community forum and plugin ecosystem.

Latest developments

In 2025 Grafana Labs replaced eight deprecated synthetic monitoring probes with eight new AWS-hosted probes. After acquiring Volkov Labs (discussed publicly from September 2025), Grafana Labs assumed maintenance of the Business Suite / BI plugins and in 2026 extended that support through the end of 2026. Other 2026 items include general availability of k6 Studio 2.0 browser test authoring and autocorrelation, cost attribution for synthetic monitoring, GrafanaCON 2026 announcements, an AI Week, and a stated Leader placement in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Observability Platforms.

Full profile — market position, technology, go-to-market, geography, history, risks & controversies

Market position

Described on the company site as positioned as a Leader in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Observability Platforms, evaluated among 19 vendors and placed furthest in Completeness of Vision.

Open-source foundation and open-standards approach (OpenTelemetry, Prometheus) with a stated no rip-and-replace, connect-existing-tools posture, unified handling of multiple telemetry signals in one platform, and telemetry cost reduction claims via Adaptive Telemetry.

Technology

Observability platform covering logs, metrics, traces and profiles, built on open standards including OpenTelemetry and Prometheus, with a plugin/integration architecture. Synthetic monitoring runs from a network of public probes hosted on cloud infrastructure (probes migrated to AWS regions in 2025, replacing Linode and Digital Ocean locations, to support k6-powered scripted and browser synthetics). AI features include an assistant, automated investigations, and observability for AI agents.

Go-to-market

Open source adoption and community as the top of funnel, self-serve free and paid Grafana Cloud sign-up, a no-registration public demo environment (Grafana Play), plugin and integration ecosystem, plus community events such as GrafanaCON and an industry observability survey.

Operators, SREs, DevOps and platform teams, from startups to Fortune 500 enterprises; named customer references include BlackRock, Pegasystems, Lovable, LATAM Airlines and Delivery Hero.

Geography

Global service delivery; Grafana Cloud synthetic monitoring public probes are distributed across AMER (seven locations), EMEA (eight) and APAC (seven), with 2025 additions in Calgary, Hyderabad, Indonesia, Montreal, Spain, UAE, Stockholm and Zurich.

History

Sources today document only recent activity: 2025 synthetic probe migration, the Volkov Labs acquisition and subsequent plugin maintenance transfer, and 2026 product and event announcements.

Risks & controversies

Community members raised concerns after the Volkov Labs acquisition about continuity, licensing and feature restrictions for widely used third-party Business Suite plugins, noting that Volkov Labs would stop releasing new features, updates or compatibility patches, and questioning Grafana Labs' track record of sustaining community-supported plugins (citing a Tour plugin unmaintained since 2021). Discussion also highlighted the general sustainability/funding problem for third-party open-source plugin development.
