GoGuardian describes itself as the leading K-12 web filtering and classroom management provider, claiming coverage of about half of US K-12 students. Wikipedia notes it was named the 27th fastest-growing technology company in North America in 2018 and lists Securly as a comparable web filtering vendor. At the time of the 2020 Pear Deck deal, its advisor described partnerships with over 10,000 schools and more than 10 million students in the United States.

Technology

Cloud-delivered filtering and monitoring software with browser extensions and agents spanning ChromeOS, Windows, macOS, and iPadOS, plus DNS-based network-level filtering for unmanaged and BYOD devices. AI models are used for threat detection, proxy blocking, self-harm and violence risk signals across web searches, email, social media and AI chat sites, and for turning behavioral trends into policy recommendations. The software can capture and control student screens and tabs, view running applications, and historically could log keystrokes and activate webcams (features the company says were removed in October 2015, though camera activation with student permission remains configurable in Chrome extension settings). Integrations include Google Classroom, YouTube filtering, and Google Admin Console synchronization.

History

After launching in 2014, GoGuardian reported by June 2015 that it was installed in more than 1,600 of an estimated 15,000 US school districts. In January 2015, Los Angeles Unified School District selected GoGuardian to support its 1:1 device rollout, providing device tracking, grade-level filtering, and CIPA compliance support. GoGuardian for Teachers launched in September 2015, followed by a Google Classroom integration announced in January 2016. In May 2018 the company was acquired by private equity firm Sumeru Equity Partners and added Tony Miller to its board; in August 2018 it launched Beacon, its self-harm and suicide risk detection product. In November 2020, GoGuardian merged with (and, per its financial advisor, acquired) Pear Deck, with terms undisclosed. In 2024, Rich Preece succeeded co-founder Advait Shinde as CEO.

Risks & controversies

The company has faced sustained student-privacy criticism. Parents have characterized the software as spyware given the breadth of data collection, which Wikipedia describes as potentially including webcam, microphone, keyboard, screen and browsing-history data on school-issued or personal devices. Researcher Elana Zeide warned in 2016 of overreach in suicide-prevention monitoring, and ASCA ethics chair Carolyn Stone called at-home search tracking intrusive and normalizing of constant monitoring. Keystroke tracking and remote webcam activation were removed in October 2015, though camera activation with student permission remains available via Chrome extension settings. The Electronic Frontier Foundation criticized the company in 2023 over inconsistent filtering, the risk of Beacon substituting for mental-health professionals, and the potential for collected data to be used to track or advertise to children under 13. GoGuardian has also been criticized for flagging and blocking LGBTQ keywords. The Wikipedia article itself carries a neutrality dispute notice.
