Company profile

researched Aug 2026

FreshDesk (Freshdesk) is a software-as-a-service provider of cloud-based customer support tooling, founded in 2010 in Chennai, India by former Zoho employees Girish Mathrubootham and Shan Krishnasamy; one account also names Vijay Shankar as a co-founder. The core product routes customer issues arriving by phone, web, email, chat and social channels into tickets, then helps agents manage, prioritize and distribute them, with game-mechanics features such as rewards for ticket resolution and first-call resolution, and built-in integrations with third-party applications including Salesforce.com, Basecamp and Constant Contact.

The company broadened from a single help desk product into a suite. Freshservice, an IT service management product for in-house IT support offering asset management, incident management and service request tracking, was launched in January 2014. Freshsales, a CRM and sales system for high-velocity sales teams, followed as a second major product, along with Hotline.io, an in-app support and engagement platform for mobile-first businesses, and Mobihelp for in-app mobile support. In 2017 Freshdesk changed its corporate name to Freshworks Inc. Under the Freshworks brand the portfolio also includes Freshchat, Freshcaller and Freshteam, spanning CRM, ITSM and e-commerce marketing tools.

Freshworks moved its headquarters from Chennai to San Mateo, California in 2018 and completed a Nasdaq initial public offering (ticker FRSH) that raised $1.03 billion. Wikipedia reports 2025 revenue of $838.8 million, operating income of $13.2 million and net income of $183.7 million, described as the company's first GAAP-profitable year, with roughly 5,300 employees.

Founding story

Girish Mathrubootham, then VP of Product Management at Zoho Corporation's ManageEngine division and a builder of on-premise helpdesk systems since 2004, read a Hacker News thread about Zendesk raising prices by 60%-300% and the resulting customer dissatisfaction. A comment on that thread pointing to the market opening convinced him to build a SaaS customer support product. He backordered the expiring freshdesk.com domain on GoDaddy, recruited his Zoho colleague Shan Krishnasamy as technical co-founder, and both resigned in October 2010. Because recurring-payment gateways were unavailable to them in India, they incorporated the company in the U.S. while also registering an Indian entity for employees and office space; early spending included roughly $450 for logo and website design and $350-400 on Google AdWords, Facebook and LinkedIn ads that produced over 150 beta signups on a monthly burn of about $5,000 for a six-person team. The founding team set a Plan B to shut down if they could not ship in nine months and reach $20,000 in revenue in the following nine months; the prototype begun in October 2010 was ready about eight months later.

Business model

Subscription-based software-as-a-service sold to businesses, delivered over the cloud with a multi-product suite (customer support, ITSM, CRM, chat and telephony). Early positioning emphasized affordability and consolidated billing for SMB customers who did not want separate invoices for helpdesk, contact management, feedback forums and satisfaction surveys.

Recurring SaaS subscription revenue; the company reported revenue of $838.8 million in 2025 and had previously reported annual recurring revenue above $300 million in February 2021.

Traction

Customer count grew from 23,000 in June 2014 (including over 10,000 added in the preceding two quarters) to more than 50,000 clients in over 145 countries by late 2015 and over 80,000 by November 2016. Headcount grew from six founders-era employees to about 500 in 2015, 800+ in 2016, 4,000+ by 2022 and roughly 5,300 in 2025. Reported valuation was about $500 million in 2015 and $4.57 billion in May 2022; the IPO raised $1.03 billion.

Latest developments

Freshworks acquired Device42 for $230 million in May 2024 and installed Dennis Woodside as CEO with founder Girish Mathrubootham moving to executive chairman. It agreed in December 2025 to acquire AI-powered incident management platform FireHydrant, closing in January 2026, and reported 2025 as its first GAAP-profitable year with $183.7 million net income on $838.8 million revenue. In March 2026 it appointed Ian Tickle as chief revenue officer, and in April 2026 it introduced a new IT Asset Management (ITAM) product replacing the tool renamed "IT Asset Management - Classic".

β–ΈFull profile β€” market position, technology, go-to-market, geography, history, risks & controversies

Market position

Positioned as a lower-cost cloud alternative to incumbent helpdesk vendors, competing in a crowded customer support market against Zendesk, Salesforce's Desk.com and Zoho, and described in Indian press as a leading example of Indian enterprise SaaS.

Multi-channel ticketing with gamification of agent workflows, broad third-party integrations, an expanding multi-product suite rather than a single helpdesk tool, and pricing aimed at customers underserved or priced out by incumbents.

Technology

Cloud-delivered SaaS platform converting phone, email, web, chat and social media interactions into support tickets, extended through acquisitions adding video/voice/text chat and co-browsing (1CLICK.io), mobile messaging (Konotor), social customer service (Airwoot), collaboration (Framebench), data integration (Pipemonk) and AI/chatbot technology (Chatimity, Joe Hukum). Later products cover ITSM asset, incident and service-request management.

Go-to-market

Initially online, self-serve and inbound: paid search and social advertising, blog content and a web signup form drove early beta users, and the founders emphasized that online support alone was sufficient to win global clients. The company later added regional sales offices and localized teams, and a $10 million "Future Fund" offering free help desk support to 500+ startups.

Businesses of all sizes, with early emphasis on small and mid-sized businesses, underserved multi-brand support use cases and segments priced out by incumbent tools; later expansion into larger global brands. Named customers include Hugo Boss, The Atlantic, UNICEF and Atwell College.

Geography

Founded and largely staffed in Chennai, India (a 60,000 sq ft office as of 2015), with offices added in San Francisco, London and Sydney, a European office in Berlin opened in 2016 under managing director Arun Mani for Continental Europe, and U.S. headquarters that moved from San Bruno to San Mateo, California in 2018. Customers span more than 145 countries.

History

Founded in Chennai in 2010 as Freshdesk out of a small office, the company signed its first customer, Australia's Atwell College, in June 2011 and won the Microsoft BizSpark Startup Challenge that same month. Venture funding followed from Accel Partners and Tiger Global Management (2012), a $7 million round in 2013, a $31 million Series D in June 2014 led by Tiger Global with Accel and Google Capital, a $50 million round in April 2015, and a $55 million Series F in November 2016 led by Sequoia Capital India with Accel. From August 2015 the company made a series of acquisitions - 1CLICK.io, Frilp, Konotor, Framebench, Airwoot and Chatimity - followed by Pipemonk in January 2017. Freshdesk renamed itself Freshworks Inc. in 2017, acquired Joe Hukum (2017) and Natero (2019), relocated its headquarters to San Mateo, California in 2018, and listed on Nasdaq, raising $1.03 billion. Zoho accused Freshworks of stealing intellectual property in 2020; the suit was settled in 2021. Freshworks bought Device42 for $230 million in May 2024, when Girish Mathrubootham became executive chairman and Dennis Woodside became CEO, and agreed in December 2025 to acquire incident-management platform FireHydrant, closing in January 2026.

Risks & controversies

In 2020 Zoho, the former employer of the founders, accused Freshworks of stealing its intellectual property; the litigation was settled in 2021. The company also operates in a crowded market with well-capitalized competitors including Zendesk (which went public in May 2014) and Salesforce's Desk.com.
